Director's Cut: Music From The Films Of Martin Scorsese
New York Roots Music Association & Saturday Night Social Club – "Music and film are inseparable. They always have been and always will be." - Martin Scorsese On Saturday, March 24th, The New York Roots Music Association (NYRMA) is proud to present "Director's Cut: Music From The Films Of Martin Scorsese." To a film maker, music is as an important element, sometimes even more important, as is the actor or dialogue in the scene. The right background music adds emotion, rhythm and can increase the emotional aspects of what is often considered mainly a visual experience. You would be hard pressed to find another director who uses music to the level of Martin Scorsese. With a blend of scored soundtrack music and popular recordings, Scorsese forms a bond between light, dialogue, sound and music that creates a moment in time that becomes inseparable. Ask anyone what their favorite Scorsese film scene is and chances are they will mention the song that is playing in the background. The NYRMA All-Stars will be playing songs from such classic Scorsese films as "Mean Streets," "Goodfellows," "The Departed," "Taxi Driver," "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and many others. Join NYRMA as we bring these classics to life on Saturday, March 24th featuring over 30 of Long Island’s most talented musicians. Throughout the night, you'll hear selections from a wide variety of artists including The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Harry Nilson, Louis Prima, REM, Tony Bennett, The Clash, Elmore James, Ray Charles, The Beach Boys and many more! The NYRMA All-Stars, featuring Tom Ryan, Howie Silverman, Mark Pohl, Al Speed, Dan Weymouth, Don Olsen, Rich Hall, Gary Dawson, Chris James, Steve Prisco, Mikey Vitale, Russ Seeger and Dave Wise will back an incredible selection of guest vocalists including Allen Santoriello, Annie Mark, Jessica Upham, Raecine Coles, Jim Treutlein, Andrew Fortier, Gil McLean, Jeff McClary, Bill Shuren, Claudia Jacobs, Tom Gould, Cathy Kreger, Pete Mancini, Mike Drance, Nate Schweber, Jessica Silverman-Salm, Eamonn Bowles, Mary Lamont, Jim Marchese and more to be announced! The show will take place at 8PM (doors open at 7PM) on Saturday, March 24th, 2018 at the American Legion Post 360, located at 1 Mill Dam Road, in Huntington, NY. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 day of show. Located right on beautiful Huntington Harbor, the Legion offers plenty of space to rock out, a large, fully-staffed bar area and ample on-site parking! Judy Carmichael in Swing Time!
Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts – Grammy® nominated pianist, vocalist and songwriter Judy Carmichael is considered one of the leading interpreters of classic swing and stride piano. The great Count Basie nicknamed Judy “Stride” in reference to her mastery of that early piano style popularized by Fats Waller and Art Tatum. Judy and her quartet, with special guest Harry Allen, will celebrate the music of Gershwin, Benny Goodman and other swing era greats in an evening of gems from the Great American Songbook and Judy’s own witty compositions. Judy’s musical knowledge and wit come together on her weekly NPR / SiriusXm radio program, “Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired,” now in its 18th year, where she talks with celebrated creative artists from Seth MacFarlane to Tony Bennett and Billy Joel about their love for jazz and how it inspires them. “Judy Carmichael is a great entertainer. Her playing is masterly and her linking material show her to be a raconteur in the Ustinov mold.” – BBC Radio “astounding, flawless, captivating” – The New York Times “is a major figure in keyboard jazz performance.” – The San Francisco Examiner “Judy is a one-woman force for good; more to the point, she’s a player of extraordinary accomplishment who has made stride piano relevant again.” – London Times “Carmichael exhibits a truly remarkable ability to channel Peggy Lee's breathy invitingness and her befogged insouciance.” – JazzTimes
