John Gorka at The Iron Horse Music Hall
Iron Horse Entertainment/IHEG – Doors at 5:30pm. An Iron Horse fixture and favorite. From New Jersey, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. Traveling to New York City, Jack Hardy's legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer-songwriter) became a powerful source of education and encouragement. Folk meccas like Texas' Kerrville Folk Festival (where he won the New Folk Award in 1984) and Boston followed, and his stunningly soulful baritone voice and original songwriting began turning heads. Those who had at one time inspired him - Suzanne Vega, Bill Morrissey, Nanci Griffith, Christine Lavin, Shawn Colvin - had become his peers . For his latest album, Gorka presents his fans with an opportunity to hear a sort of parallel-universe version of his first album, 1987's "I Know," with his most recent release, "Before Beginning: the Unreleased 'I Know,' " which is actually the debut he recorded before his actual debut. Basically, here's the deal: Gorka went in the studio in 1985 to make his first record for Red House, and it came out sounding good but not the way Gorka wanted. Eventually, he got it right, and these songs were released in stripped-back versions that sounded more like the ones in Gorka's head.

Resilience: Movie and Discussion
Berkshire Museum – Learn how you can build resilience in your life and the lives of others at a FREE screening of the documentary film "Resilience" followed by a discussion with staff from Clinical Support Options. "Resilience" is a new movie that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and a new movement to treat and prevent toxic stress. “The child may not remember, but the body remembers.” Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the new documentary "Resilience" reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. "Resilience", however, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose. "Resilience" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. 1 hr., not rated, documentary Presented in partnership with the Berkshire United Way, with Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and Clinical and Support Options.

Ben Sollee & Kentucky Native at The Iron Horse Music Hall
Iron Horse Entertainment/IHEG – Nashville, TN – Acclaimed cellist, composer, songwriter and activist Ben Sollee announces the release of Ben Sollee And Kentucky Native (Soundly Music) on August 11th, 2017. Tracing the origins of a traditional American genre back to early immigrants, Sollee takes a non-traditional approach, blending the influences of early Irish and Scottish musicians with the rhythms of Mexico, Africa, and India. This album is Sollee’s most personally revealing work and a reflection of his native Kentucky, a place like many others, that’s still helping refine the ever-changing Bluegrass genre.Inspired by the interactions and collaborations of string musicians from all walks of life, Sollee and his bandmates recorded twelve songs in a cabin at the Bernheim Arboretum And Research Forest Center in Clermont, KY. Each song was captured live as an ensemble with a mobile, analog studio and with just a few overdubs. Together, they thoughtfully reimagined a revered style with world music characteristics.
