Because of that, many mental health practitioners become clinical supervisors immediately upon receiving their licenses without having any additional training in the specialized counseling practice of clinical supervision. Functionally, this often translates into new supervisors using counseling skills to work with new supervisees instead of supervision skills, a scenario that isn't always very effective or even helpful. For this reason, many states are now beginning to add an advanced practice credential to their mental health licensing regulations that only permits entry-level licensed professionals to practice their mental health discipline, but doesn't allow them to supervise within it until they have earned their advanced practice credential, which specifically assesses for competence in the counseling specialty of clinical supervision. This layering of clinical practice skills and competencies not only helps to protect the public, but also helps to prevent newly licensed mental health professionals from getting grieved or disciplined by failing to provide adequate clinical supervision. As an antidote to this serious problem within all of the mental health professions, the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE; An affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors [NBCC]) developed the voluntary Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential. In their own words, the CCE defines an Approved Clinical Supervisor as a mental health professional "who has met approved national professional supervision standards; promotes the professional identity, visibility, and accountability of Approved Clinical Supervisors; and encourages the professional growth of Approved Clinical Supervisors" (ACS Application Packet, p. 3). All of the clinical supervisors at Noeticus affirm this position and are either already Approved Clinical Supervisors through the CCE or are actively working toward it and we would like to see more licensed mental health professionals who are providing clinical supervision in Colorado adopt the same stance. Indeed, we are committed to helping transform "accidental oversight" into "strong clinical supervision" by offering both the training and the supervision of supervision necessary for licensed mental health professionals to earn the Approved Clinical Supervisors credential. Training Objectives: This training is the first part of a three-part series covering the theory and practice of clinical supervision, all of which (when taken together) meet the training requirements for the ACS through the CCE. During our Clinical Supervision I training, participants learn the following theoretical foundations: - Roles and functions of clinical supervisors - Models of clinical supervision - Methods and techniques in clinical supervision - Legal and ethical issues in clinical supervision - The basics of the Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice Triangle™ During our Clinical Supervision II training (see below for dates), participants build upon their theoretical foundations and add to them practical skills as they learn the following: - Mental health related professional development - Supervisory relationship issues - Cultural issues in clinical supervision - Group supervision themes and issues - Evaluation of supervisee competence and the supervision process - Integration of the Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice Triangle™ Finally, during our Clinical Supervision III training (see below for dates), participants integrate the principles and theory they learned in Clinical Supervision I with the advanced concepts and skills taught in Clinical Supervision II and apply them in an experiential format. This includes: - Live supervision demonstration - Videotaped observation and feedback of clinical supervision - Utilization of various models of supervision - Incorporation of ethical, legal, and professional practice concepts - Maintenance of socially-just, culturally sensitive perspective - Further integration of the Noeticus Counselor Training and Practice Triangle™ In addition, in the Clinical Supervision I training, attendees begin to work on their Professional Supervision/Consultation Disclosure Statements/Contracts and will have the information necessary to complete a version "ready to go" - and that meets the ACS requirements - by the end of their Clinical Supervision II training. This allows them time for feedback and editing so that they have a completed version ready for submission immediately after completing Clinical Supervision III. ACS Summary of Requirements: (Click HERE for details): - Master's degree or higher in a mental health field - NCC, License as a mental health provider or clinical supervisor - 45 clock hours of training in clinical supervision - Five years (4000 hours) post-master's experience - 1500 of 4000 hours in direct service to clients - 100 hours of providing clinical supervision - Endorsement from a mental health professional - Supervision self-assessment - Professional Supervision/Consultation Disclosure Statement/Contract Training Instructor: Francisca Mix, MA, LPC, BC-DMT, NCC, ACS, is the Clinical Director of the Center for Personal Wellness at Noeticus Counseling Center and Training Institute and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS). Come hear from a local family practice physician as he outlines the various obstacles to affordable care, as well as common-sense solutions. We will then have a detailed discussion of the free-market alternatives he and his patients have discovered to help keep costs down.
