Series: Blocks, Straps & Chairs, OH MY!
Be Yoga Studios, LLC – Deepen your practice with props in this three week series on Wednesdays from November 1st through November 15th from 5:45-6:45. B. K. S. Iyengar introduced props into the modern practice of yoga to allow all practitioners access to the benefits of the postures regardless of physical condition, age, or length of study. The central purpose for using yoga props is to address a need for support. Props help practitioners at all levels gain the sensitivity of a pose while receiving the benefits over time without overextending themselves. They allow students to practice asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath control) with greater effectiveness, ease, and stability. In all the years I have shared yoga with different people at different levels of practice, I have yet to find one person who didn’t benefit from using a yoga prop in one or more yoga poses. For everyone from the most flexible and strong practitioner to the least, a strategically placed yoga prop can elevate the physical and spiritual trajectory of the yoga practice. Meet Your Yoga Props Blocks Blocks can be placed in three different ways, resulting in three possible heights: they can be laid flat (lowest height), placed on edge (middle height), or stood on end (tallest height). Blocks can be used to bring the floor to you to assist with flexibility or to wake up dull areas of your body. They also help to “reduce the reach,” access core stability, and provide unique leverage in far-reaching forward bends. Blocks are very versatile, and you will love them. Belts Belts stabilize joints, encourage flexibility, support inflexible parts of the body, and create traction and space—two magic words in yoga therapy, as many suffer compression somewhere. Using a yoga belt can provide instant relief for some people. Chairs Chairs help us to become aware of our habitual patterns (and often injuries) that don’t serve us anymore, i.e., hunched or tight shoulders, achy back, compressed spine, osteopenia (low bone mass), disc injuries, crunched neck, wrist issues (carpal tunnel syndrome), tight hips and leg discomfort. Through "mindfulness" we learn how to release these old patterns and create new and positive muscle memory in our bodies. More acute health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, osteoporosis, obesity and scoliosis (curved spine) can improve from a daily yoga regimen.

Gallery Talk by Sherry Simms
Akron Art Museum – Free and Open to All Connect with artists featured in Heavy Metal at these artist-led gallery talks. Discover how each artist works and what inspires them. Meet in the gallery at 6:30 pm for these free dialogues. Sherry Simms is an associate professor and metalsmithing area coordinator at the University of Akron Myers School of Art. Her necklace, 1009 Roses, was created in remembrance of her younger brother, who passed away in an accident. The overwhelming number of floral arrangements at his funeral gave her the idea to create an abundance of tiny roses. They number 1009, one for each day separating the birth of the two siblings. 1009 Roses, along with another artwork by Simms, is on view in Heavy Metal at the Akron Art Museum through February 18, 2018. Find out more about Heavy Metal: http://bit.ly/2uVPNfe Upcoming Heavy Metal artist talks: Thursday, February 1 • Emily Sullivan Smith image: Sherry Simms, 1009 Roses, 2001, nickel-plated copper, copper and enamel, Courtesy of the artist
