An Evening with David Rawlings
Tivoli Theatre • Walker Theatre • Memorial Auditorium – Tickets on sale now! Dave will have a full band including longtime compatriot Gillian Welch, Paul Kowert (of The Punch Brothers), Willie Watson and Brittany Haas. Acclaimed songwriter and guitarist David Rawlings will release his freshly pressed third album, Poor David’s Almanack, on August 11th via Acony Records. For Poor David’s Almanack, Rawlings leaves the Dave Rawlings Machine moniker behind and serves up a wry mixture of acoustic and electric music rich in ageless American vernacular. The album of ten new songs was crafted by studio wizards Ken Scott (Beatles, David Bowie) and Matt Andrews on analog tape during a week of sessions at legendary Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Rawlings and longtime compatriot Gillian Welch joined together with Willie Watson, Paul Kowert, Brittany Haas, Ketch Secor, and Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes to produce an album for all seasons. The touring iteration of Rawlings’ band, the all-star Dave Rawlings Machine, will embark on the first leg of a national tour this August to support Poor David’s Almanack, as well as perform favorites from the first two Dave Rawlings Machine records, A Friend of A Friend and Nashville Obsolete. This release marks the 8th studio collaboration between Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Their creative partnership spans over two decades and includes the GRAMMY-nominated The Harrow and the Harvest (2011), the much lauded and latest Rawlings release, Nashville Obsolete, which landed on numerous 2015 year-end bestâ€?of lists, and the 2001 GRAMMY-nominated masterpiece Time (The Revelator). All releases are available on Acony Records, the independent label they founded in 2001. In recognition of their remarkable career, Welch and Rawlings were honored with the Americana Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting in 2015 and the Berklee American Masters Award in 2016.

Next To Normal
Ensemble Theatre of Chattanooga – The story centers around a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effects that her illness and its management have had on her family. The musical also addresses the issues of grief, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry and the underbelly of suburban life. The musical was the recipient of several accolades prior to its Off Broadway debut, including the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Score and Drama Desk Awards nominations for Outstanding Actress (Alice Ripley) and Outstanding Score. After an Off-Broadway run, the show played at the Arena Stage in its temporary venue in Virginia from November 2008 to January 2009. The musical opened on Broadway in April 2009. It was nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards and won three: Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. The previous musical to win the Pulitzer was RENT in 1996, which was also directed by Michael Greif. In awarding the prize to Kitt and Yorkey, the Pulitzer Board called the show "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals." NEXT TO NORMAL has been called one of the best musicals of the 21st century and its soundtrack one of the best original soundtracks in a musical due to its graceful handling of its dark, complex subject matter and its moving and brutally honest exploration into pain. ETC is excited to be able to present this show to our community, "how we grieve is such an important facet in our lives today, especially when we don't allow ourselves that opportunity as much as we probably should," mentions Garry Lee Posey who will be directing this production for ETC. Featuring musical direction by Terry Sanford and a cast that includes ETC veterans Ryan Laskowski (RUMORS, FALSETTOS), Kyle Dagnan (LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, GODSPELL) and Normand Caissie (GODSPELL) along with community favorites Mary Beth Torgerson, Megan Cobb and Joseph Watts. Stage manager is ETC veteran Marcia Parks (RUMORS, Casting the Canvas)

Flashback Bluegrass
Barking Legs Theater – Let’s kick off 2017 with a great bluegrass event courtesy of Forever Bluegrass! FLASHBACK is a bluegrass “super group” featuring former member’s of The 1995 Grammy Nominated “Flashback” version of J.D Crowe And The Newsouth. The group features Don Rigsby, Phil Leadbetter, Richard Bennett and Curt Chapman from the original “Flashback” band. The band was formed as a 20 year reunion band, which brought all original members back together for a 2015 tour in which they were known as “The Flashback Band. J.D Crowe came back out of retirement for a short time to play 2015 dates with the group. At the end of 2015, Crowe went into retirement again. With the retirement of Crowe, Stuart Wyrick was hired to play banjo and sing baritone in early 2016. “The demise of J.D. Crowe & The New South with Crowe’s recent retirement has left a big hole in the bluegrass scene. The distinctive sound that he maintained over 40 plus years with this group has left a deep impression on our music, one that continues to be felt to this day. Now comes Flashback, a newly-formed band consisting of members of The New South in the mid-1990s, reunited to perform and record their take on that classic, J.D. Crowe sound.” Bluegrass Today $15 adv
