Tinwhistle for Beginners 7-11yrs
Hummingbirdhouse Music Studio – This 45-minute Tinwhistle class is appropriate for approximately 7-11 year olds, but depends on hand size, so some 6 year olds may be large enough, some 7's may be too small. We'll be playing the Natural Clarke Original conical shaped whistle with a wooden mouth block as it is more forgiving for small hands, with no plastic parts. Looking for interest in setting up a SPRING Semester for March thru May 2018. If you have children or grandchildren who are interested, please contact me to set up a schedule. This could be a daytime class for home schoolers or an after school class, depending upon need. For a 10-week class tuition would be $175 and includes whistle, fingering chart and mailing tube holder kids can decorate themselves. Class dates: March ? thru May ? No class over Spring Break. Class will finish before Memorial Day weekend. This is a traditional audiation-based method where kids will learn familiar tonal patterns, a wide variety of folk songs, and learn to create their own tunes as well, in several tonalities. All songs taught by rote, with the addition of harmony parts as the group is able, and some piano accompaniment as well.
Monday Mar 19 - Apr 2 @ 5:00 PM
Women's Gathering of Song
Hummingbirdhouse Music Studio – 8-week Early Spring semester. Class dates are: Feb. 12/19/26, Mar. 5/12/20, Apr. 2/9. No class on Mar. 26th over Spring Break. This class is 75 min. long. Tuition for 8-weeks is $135 (or join us when you can at the drop-in rate of $20, if space allows). Tuition can be dropped off at Hummingbirdhouse Music Studio, or ask about using PayPal. For details on how I teach what some might refer to as "by-ear singing" please read the following description. Feel free to ask questions! Group singing is one of the most fun and rewarding activities of all times, especially if you learn a few skills along the way. In this "aud-i-a-tion" based class, you won't need to read notation in order to thrive. You will experience ear training that really works - within the context of tonality (you'll hear and repeat tonal patterns in many different tonalities, learn to find and sing a "resting tone" and other important tones within a family of tones). You will also expand your understanding of rhythm with this sound-based approach, using movement to distinguish between duple and triple meter (and other more complex meters). Our harmony will come from the chordal structure of the songs we sing, so you will learn to feel right at home singing a drone or simple accompaniment pattern. Everyone's needs will be met in a group setting, so it doesn't matter whether you are a beginner or proficient, whether you feel you can't match pitch or you sing in tune very well. There is a place for all women in this singing community. You may stick with what feels easy or take opportunities to challenge yourself in a safe, encouraging environment (improvising, singing solo parts, leading sections, etc). We'll also cover helpful and healthy information on alignment for singing and good breathing practices. We'll sing on neutral syllables to better focus on tonal quality, learn tonal solfege syllables to help the brain find it's way around the tonalities, and sing songs from various traditions, perhaps not entirely in English. Some categories include: echo songs, call and response songs, rounds, songtales (songs that tell a story), with mostly uplifting lyrics, but definitely spirited or emotive songs.

Music Storytime 1-6 yrs
Hummingbirdhouse Music Studio – Join me for a 30 minute MUSIC storytime for children ages one to six, offered every other week. I'll be singing songs in book form as well as improvising tunes to children's favorite books with poetic texts. (I have plenty of great literature, but I will also take requests. You may bring one favorite to share if you like). This storytime session falls into the category of informal guidance. This is not a class - no formal instruction will be given, yet children will benefit greatly from attending. I'll be modeling good quality in-tune singing, which will give young children the opportunity to learn to audiate (think musically with meaning). $5 per child. Drop in only but you will need to RSVP that morning to make sure I have room for you. I can fit about 7 children with caregivers in my studio space. Let me know if you are interested and I'll give you a number to text your attendance confirmation.

The Mighty Pines at Logboat Brewing Company
Logboat Brewing Company – The Mighty Pines love Columbia! And we love playing at the hippest hang in town: LOGBOAT. Join the band for a FREE outdoor show (weather permitting) as we welcome spring in Mid MO! Rock on. The Mighty Pines are a fierce roots band making music inspired by the wide rivers and red-brick streets of St. Louis. For the last five years they’ve been fashioning their distinctive heartland sound. The music is fresh: bluegrass meets acoustic soul and rock & roll. With their genre bending original songs the band bridges the gap between groove and grass, between country and funk, between blues and folk. The music can at one moment be raucous and at the next hushed, with soaring harmonies keeping it sweet through every song. The Pines formed in 2012 and since have released three records, played hundreds of live shows and shared bills with such renowned acts as Railroad Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, Sam Bush, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Fruition, and many more in venues across the country. This is a band that can rage a late night festival show or captivate an intimate listening room crowd. Their latest release, Lonesome Blues, establishes The Mighty Pines as a young, exciting force in grass-roots music--but there’s only way to truly experience this dynamic quartet: see them live.
