Your journey, your choice join us for one, two, or all three days: OWL 1- Day 1 & 2 OWL 1 Refresher- Day 1 OWL 2- Day 2 & 3 OWL1: Foundations and Application Learn how to create a kinesthetic, student- centered, proficiency-based classroom. This workshop explores how understanding National Standards and proficiency-based instruction strategies can create an interactive, student-centered classroom. OWL1 Foundations- What is Second Language Acquisition research and how does that apply to the classroom? This workshop includes activities with students from the host school and directly addresses teacher confidence in an immersion classroom. This session includes activities designed around building a strong sense of community and solidarity, creating curriculum based off of the student, and language levels. OWL1 Application – How can OWL be implemented in line with the current program? What tools, strategies, and techniques can be incorporated? The focus is on seamlessly integrating authentic reading and writing and communication into the planning, activities and assessment of a classroom. OWL2: Systems & Structures This workshop is designed for participants who want to develop systems to support proficiency-based learning. Through further exploration of the strategies & techniques introduced in the Foundations workshop, we go deeper into how to create a space for acquisition. Tepper began his career in the music industry as a staff songwriter in New York City. While in New York, Robert formed a partnership with fellow singer/songwriter Benny Mardones. Downtown Stroll and Scavenger Hunt
Fort Smith Museum of History – On Saturday, September 30, join a variety of re-enactors for a "Downtown Stroll" at 11:00 am and a "Scavenger Hunt" for children at 12:00 noon. Meet historical Fort Smith characters and learn little known facts of Fort Smith history as well as meeting well-known legends from the city's rich and colorful past. Learn the stories of Judge Isaac C. Parker, Private Henry Strong, Marie Cole, U. S. Deputy Marshal Madsen, Belle Starr, Mayor Fagan Bourland, and Bonnie and Clyde portrayed by Floyd Robison, Stephen Christian, Betsey Rooth, Steve Raney, Donna Knecht, Bill Rooth, Ruby Dean and Rodney Dean with Sue Robison and Bambi Clifton as tour guides. The downtown stroll and scavenger hunt is included with museum admission: $7 adults; $5 veterans and military; $2 children; under age 6 are free. In the event of rain or inclement weather, the scavenger hunt and stroll will be held indoors the Fort Smith Museum of History.

Yoga for Special Needs
Yogaterrium – Yogaterrium is teaming up with The New Normal (a local special needs group) to offer a monthly yoga class just for those in our community with autism, disabilities and other special needs. This will be a shorter yoga class (30 minutes) and will go over basic yoga poses, breathing and relaxation. Instructor Terri Hargrove has been teaching private lessons to a teen boy with autism for more than 3 years. Terri has personally seen the benefits and improvements their weekly lessons have had and wishes to make yoga more accessible for the rest of the special needs community. This class is open to ages 5 years and older. Parents and/or care takers are encouraged to attend the yoga class too. The studio provides plenty of yoga mats and props at no additional charge. Cooking Demos with Chef Jason Knapp
The Fort Smith Convention Center – Join Jason for his cooking demos at the Petit Jean Meat Chef's Kitchen Stage - Saturday at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm Sunday at 12pm Presented by Petit Jean Meats It was at the Waffle House, in 1997, that Jason discovered his passion for food and went on to graduate from the Central Arkansas School of Apprenticeship with the American Culinary Federation. .Jason served as the Executive Chef for Governor Mike Beebe and First Lady Ginger Beebe serving anywhere from 2 to 2000 guests on any given day and many visiting luminaries. Jason moved on to Pulaski Technical College in 2009 to run The Big Rock Bistro instructing young culinarians followed by 3 years as the Executive Chef for The University of Central Arkansas. Leaving UCA, he was proud to open the Green Leaf Grill in Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Sheild as a health and wellness center for their employees. In 2008, Jason earned the honored title of Certified Executive Chef by the American Culinary Federation. He competes yearly in The Diamond Chef event and holds titles of Apprentice of the Year ,Sous Chef of the Year ,Chef of the Year and Diamond Chef Arkansas. In 2013 Jason earned the Pro Chef II certification from the Culinary Institute of America. Today, Jason is proud to serve as Executive Chef for Sysco Arkansas.
