Beginning Spanish
Shelby County Cooperative Extension – Have you been thinking about learning Spanish? A second language can be very helpful in the workplace, in volunteer opportunties, or just to improve your memory. "Beginning Spanish," taught by Rosie Young, will start September 12. The classes are shceduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will meet every Tuesday for seven weeks at the Shelby County Extension Office (with one scheduled field trip). The registration cost of $30 includes printed material. Please call the Extension Office at 633-4593 to register.

Blackout Poetry
Paul Sawyier Public Library – Celebrate Banned Books Week with blackout poetry! Fuse poetry and visual art as you repurpose the existing text of discarded book pages. Author Talk and Book Signing: Jamie Ford
Lexington Public Library – Bestselling author Jamie Ford comes to the library just in time for the debut of his third novel, "Love and Other Consolation Prizes." Since publication of his popular World War II novel, "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet," Ford's work has moved back in time, to the Great Depression in "Songs of Willow Frost" and now to the 1909 Seattle World's Fair, where a 12-year-old orphan boy discovers that he is to be raffled off "to a good home." By the time of Seattle's second World's Fair 50 years later, the one-time orphan has his own family and with its own secrets to hide. Frank Baum Adapted and Directed by Rachel Kitchen-Nipper Assistant Directed by Braden Parks Produced by Justin Arnold & Heather Thompson Show Dates: Dec. 8, 9, 10 Auditions Sept. 30, 10:00 am Read Through is Oct. 8 at 2:30 pm Rehearsals are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays 5:00-7:00 Youth ages 5-18 Cast size limited to 25 participants Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus is a fantastical tale of how Santa Claus came to be. Narrated by L. Frank Baum, we follow the life of Neclaus, a mortal baby found and raised in the magical Forest of Burzee by a wood nymph named Necile. Claus grows up content among the sweet immortals, learning valuable lessons. One day he embarks on a journey with the Great Ak and learns of the suffering and difficulties that are known to humankind. He is especially touched by the innocence of children and wants nothing more than to ease their burdens and bring them joy, for “In all the world there is nothing as beautiful as a happy child”. Will the Immortal Court help Claus conquer the most challenging obstacle of all? Roles: Claus – Central figure. Must be able to portray very young to old man as Claus ages throughout the story. Casting male 13-18. Baum – Narrates the show in the style reminiscent of Burl Ives’ snowman in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Carries the pace of the show, must be a charismatic story teller. Casting male 13-18 Ak - Wise, honest, thought provoking, commanding, yet gentle. A father figure to Claus. An “Oberon, Odin, Obi Wan Kenobi type” must really have a strong presence. Casting male 15-18. Necile- Nymph who adopts Claus. Restless at first, matures in nature. Necile is a soft but strong young woman. Casting female 14-18 Queen Zurline – The elegant and fair Queen of the nymphs, she is a nurturing, motherly type. Casting female 15-18 Rowan – Wood Nymph of Burzee, graceful and young. Casting Female 10-15 Laurel – Wood Nymph of Burzee, graceful, content, a rule follower. Casting female 10-15 Epaulette – wood nymph, one of the younger ones, she is a little flighty at times. Casting female 7-10 Camellia – the youngest of the wood nymphs. Casting female 5-7 Knook King Nelko - Two characters from the book are rolled into this one curmudgeonly old fellow. Casting male 11-15 Fairy Queen Wisteria – Graceful, sweet, kind. Casting female 12-18 Will Knook- Impish yet gnarly and a little bit cranky. Chief guardian of the animals. Actor will double as the Wind King in the Immortal Court. Casting male 10-16 Jack Frost – Mischievous but not mean. Friend of Claus. Needs to have a lot of energy and a good laugh. Actor will double as Bill Knook. Casting male 11-16 Phil Knook – Impish creature that tends animals. Actor will double as the Sound King in the Immortal Court. Weekum – Little village boy, small, not very old. Actor will double as the Blue Ryl. Casting male 5-6 Mayrie – Very small and young child. Friend of Claus. Needs to have a lot of personality. Actor will double as the Red Ryl. Casting female 5-8 King Awgwa – Mean, Antagonist. Scowling creature. Looking for some stage presence to pull this one off as evil but not too scary and a wee bit funny. Actor will double as Bo the Master Mariner of the world in the Immortal Court. Casting male 14-18 Curly Awgwa - One of the bumbling bad guys. The three Awgwa cronies are based on the “Three Stooges”. Actor will double as Kern, Master of the Plains and Meadows in the Immortal Court. Casting male 10-15 Larry Awgwa – One of the three bumbling bad guys. Actor will double as the Sleep Fay King in the Immortal Court. Casting male 8-15 Mo Awgwa – Leader of the three Awgwa flunkies. Actor will double as the Gnome King in the immortal court. Casting male 8-15 Ryl Queen – Queen Buttercup is the yellow Ryl. Elfish, happy and sweet. Casting female 8-13 Fairy 1 “Orchid” – Graceful, kind. Actor will double as the Water Sprite Queen in the Immortal Court. Casting Female 8-17 Fairy 2 “Iris” – Graceful, kind. Actor will double as the Light Queen in the Immortal Court. Casting female 8-17 Flossie – a reindeer and friend of Claus. Will double as the Panther. Casting either gender 8-18 Glossie – a reindeer and friend to Claus. Will double as the Macaw. South Elkhorn Christian Church – 4 Week Adult Sunday School Class Oct 1 - 22, Sunday mornings, 9:00 AM Room 111 Lectio Divina is a slow, contemplative praying of the scriptures. It is not meant as Bible study but rather, an opportunity to listen to and for the Divine with an open heart. Through the repeated reading of a short passage of scripture, each of us invites a personal and intimate message from God, relevant to this moment in our lives. In addition to her companioning work with individuals, Lisa often works with small groups in her home, in churches and in work places. These groups share contemplative experiences around an eclectic collection of topics and bear witness to the Divine Presence in the lives of one another.
