February Food Justice Study Group Meeting
Florida Certified Organic Growers and Consumers – The Food Justice Study Group will meet February 22, 2018 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM at the Civic Media Center in Gainesville (address: 433 S Main St, Gainesville, FL 32601). All are welcome! The main reading selection for the February meeting will be Garrett M. Broad’s More than Just Food: Food Justice and Community Change that was published by the University of California Press in 2016. The book spotlights Community Services Unlimited, a food justice organization that grew out of the Southern California Black Panther Party and how the “organization seeks balance–between social change ideals and the compromises necessary to maintain fiscal solvency; between a focus on community needs and broader national and international movements; and between communicating with local residents and larger publics,” as Andrew Wenzel from the University of Southern California writes in a review. We recommend the book to anyone involved in the food justice movement, including activists, journalists, and foundations. Chapters from the book include: “Networks, Narratives and Community Action” “Food Systems, Food Movements, Food Justice” “The Youth Food Justice Movement” “From the Black Panthers to the USDA” A review of the book can be found here. And click here for an interview with the book’s author. We also want to recommend a few other readings, too (links available here: Noah McDonald, “Racial Equity in the Farm Bill: Context and Foundations”, December 1, 2017, National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE), Land & Power: Sustainable Agriculture and African Americans. Available to download here. 2018 CrossFit Open
B3 Gym – Join us for 5 weeks of fun and fitness every Friday Night at 5:30pm for the CrossFit Intramural Open at B3! The Open is the first stage of the CrossFit Games season and the largest community event of the year. Only the top 1% of athletes qualify to go to the CrossFit Games, but that doesn't mean we should miss out on any of the fun! The Open is a great way to test your fitness and see where you are! Every year, hundreds of thousands of athletes come together to compete in the worldwide competition. Five weeks of workouts, 1 workout per week. All the people you sweat alongside day in and day out during classes will be competing with you. It's like the ultimate CrossFit class. It'll make you fall deeper in love with CrossFit and get you even more pumped to keep up with your fitness journey. Each Friday night the B3 Community will get together from 5:30-8p and complete the workout for that week released by CrossFit HQ. Please note that workouts will not be announced until the Thursday prior so we won't have a lot of advance notice on what the workout is. Which is what makes it a test! Additionally, in order to run this event, we need your help! Plan to volunteer to judge a heat or two. Coach Jason will be creating a schedule each week and will make sure not to schedule you around the same time you're competing AND will have you judging someone at the same or similar level as you. Competition t-shirts are available for purchase for an additional $25. Register through the link below or on the whiteboard in the gym. It is open NOW through Feb 15th to participate! Plan to join us for a post event dinner every Friday and a Community Party after the final event on March 23rd!
