January 3rd in the Burg, Non - Scale Victories in the Vault
Susquehanna Art Museum – Each third Friday of the month the Susquehanna Art Museum is open free of admission. THE MAIN GALLERY WILL BE OPEN FROM 5:00 - 8:00pm. Pianist Ralph Diekemper will perform in the Gallery from 6:00 - 8:00pm. The Lobby Gallery and Vault will be open through 9:00pm for the Non-Scale Victories event. This month we welcome Non-Scale Victories in the Vault Gallery! Join Thrive Fitness and other Harrisburg area Health and Fitness Leaders (Medical Weight Loss Center of Harrisburg, STUDIO B POWER YOGA, Camp Curtin YMCA, Cap Collective Video, Athleta, Fitness U), as they help the Harrisburg Community, set achievable Non-Scale Victories for 2018. Hand-letterer Chelsea Foster, will be painting YOUR 2018 Non-Scale Victory goal on a REAL scale, like the one the event image, LIVE at the event. Finished scales will be displayed in the SAM Vault Gallery after the event. Chelsea Foster is a 2009 graduate of the Art Institute of York Pennsylvania (formerly Bradley Academy). She majored in graphic design and has been employed within the design and photography industry for 8 years. In 2014, her client base had become large enough to support the launch of her own small business. Her artist studio is located in downtown York, PA but her design, website and photography clients span across the world, including Hong Kong, California, Texas and many places in between. Chelsea specializes in customized hand lettering projects which include wedding invitations, murals, signage and client requests. In 2017 she taught over 25 hand lettering workshops up and down the East Coast. On view in the Main Gallery: Ansel Adams: Early Works This exhibition focuses on the masterful small-scale prints made by Adams from the 1920s into the 1950s. Already in this time period there is quite an evolution of printing style, from the soft-focus, warm-toned, painterly “Parmelian prints” of the 1920s; through the f/64 school of sharp-focused photography that he co-founded with Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham in the 1930s; and, after the War, towards a cooler, higher-contrast printmaking style. Throughout, Adams is revealed as a poet of light, both in the field and in the darkroom. Ansel Adams: Early Works is organized by art2art Circulating Exhibitions, LLC. All photographs are from the private collection of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg. This exhibition is graciously sponsored in part by Commonwealth Charter Academy and Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. Visit the exhibition homepage here: http://www.susquehannaartmuseum.org/galleries/ansel-adams/ Neil Anderson: Quartet for America Quartet for America features new works, which continue Anderson’s exploration of organic forms found in nature, but the paintings on view focus more narrowly on drawing inspiration from piled cut branches, resulting in an intricate interwoven pattern of the irregular linear grid. Upon close inspection, the surface of the work is broken up into fragmentary details, but as the viewer experiences it from a distance, the pieces suddenly pull together to form the larger shapes of the composition. This exhibition is graciously sponsored in part by Commonwealth Charter Academy and Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. Visit the exhibition homepage here: http://www.susquehannaartmuseum.org/galleries/neil-anderson/ On view in the Lobby Gallery: Memory and Invention: Robert Andriulli, on view through February 11, 2018. Paintings by Robert Andriulli, whether created from direct observations or studio elaborations that evolve from many sources, are recognizable for their painterly realism that depicts both a fidelity to subject and an uncommon visual style. For over 30 years, Robert Andriulli has explored a variety of subjects and themes, but has consistently been concerned with issues of representational landscape paintings- both rural and urban. The works created during this period represent his continued interest in responding to the various forms and light of nature and in certain juxtapositions of natural landscapes and the urban environment. Central to the work is the exploration of the formal and expressive possibilities of a motif as revealed through the process of language and art. Visit the exhibition homepage here: http://www.susquehannaartmuseum.org/galleries/robert-andriulli/ On view in the Education Center Gallery: Tropical Wasteland: Vu Nguyen, on view through February 25, 2018 The abstracted landscapes of artist Vu Nguyen are inspired by the Mekong River Delta region of Vietnam, where he was raised. The Mekong River Delta is where 22% of the country’s population lives and the source of approximately half of the country’s food production. Rising sea levels present a challenging environmental obstacle for agriculture in the region. What remains of the fertile land is plagued by widespread poverty. Widespread poverty remains a persistent fabric which holds the community together with what remains of fertile land. As an observer, Nguyen’s work interprets the affects of humans on the environment. He believes that awareness of environmental issues such as climate change can be a first step towards making changes that will sustain future generations.
