2750 NW 3rd Ave No. 12, Miami, Fl. 33127. Black Audio Film Collective at PAMM: Seven Songs for Malcolm X
Pérez Art Museum Miami – Black Audio Film Collective at PAMM presents a selection of films characterized by an interest in the diasporic African experience, memory, and new modes of representation. This evening, PAMM will screen Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993) by John Akomfrah, and the film will be introduced by Alessandra Raengo, PhD, Associate Professor, Moving Image Studies, Georgia State University. Shot in New York at the time of the release of Spike Lee’s critically important movie, Malcolm X (1992), this film portrays the life of the legendary African-American political leader, Malcolm X, aka El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. Layered with documentary footage, stylized reconstructions, and interviews with Malcom X’s widow Betty Shabazz, Spike Lee, and others, this video-essay provides a compelling and poetic portrait of postwar American culture and of one of its most mercurial figures. Location: PAMM Contact: education@pamm.org Free with museum admission. Open to the public. Space is limited. After the participants have agreed to partake in the seven-day vegan pledge, then they would fill out the information on the sign in sheet explaining their particular motivations, concerns, and goals. Buddy: A mentor will take over the case and they will contact the participants within 48 hours. The mentor will introduce themselves and they will offer moral support, guidance all the necessary motivation to help the client complete their pledge. The buddy is responsible for offering guidance and support during this endeavour. The mentor will provide as much assistance as the participant request. If the participant wants information regarding specific food items or additional assistance it will be provided. Is also in the best interests of the program that the mentor does not tell the client what they can or cannot do. Therefore, the buddy’s primary goal is to inform and guide, but never to impose their own beliefs on the participants. The participant’s buddies can take as many cases as they would like. All the buddies will be responsible for tracking their participant’s success." MIAMI CHRONICLES https://miamichronicles.org "Miami Chronicles is an online arts magazine I founded in May 2017 for The Miami Chronicles Corporation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to support the arts for cultural evolution in the community. The magazine will provide a platform of expression, inspiration, and news-sharing for local artists and cultural engineers. Miami has many talented creative individuals including poets, writers, performers, dancers, visual artists, fashion designers, photographers, chefs, activists and musicians. It is important for them to have a platform to showcase their work because seeing other artists create provides one with the fuel to continue creating. Miami Chronicles is also a literary arts magazine and publishes original lit(erature), such as poetry and stories from local writers, along with visual art from local artists. Sharing art and newsworthy stories out about the arts is a crucial part of nurturing local culture. Miami is a nexus of culture and art, attracting talent from all over the world to display their creations. Miami also has a rich underground of talented individuals who are often overlooked by the mainstream press. They are the ones who are as Jack Kerouac said: “the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels. The troublemakers. The problem child. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you cannot do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward.” Like at other times in history, people are at a crossroads in time when a change in path is absolutely necessary to ensure the survival of the human race. Many artists are also activists because art stems from a freedom of self-expression and love of freedom. It nurtures individuality and acceptance of people’s differences. Art also heightens sensitivity, emotion and empathy to all around, making one more attune to the environment. Being from Miami, I perceive the threat of climate change and sea level rise as all too real. So, humans need to evolve, especially in regards to their treatment of nature and animals in order to prevent further environmental degradation. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change. We need to go vegan, adopting a plant-based diet is the only sustainable lifestyle for the future. We need to rise up and save Miami. The local arts scene is vitally interconnected with activism, bringing attention to issues affecting our community. Art is a vehicle of evolution. How else can we stand if not united? How else can we connect if we do not express? I challenge you to express yourself in The Magic City. I challenge you to evolve. I challenge you to rise up."
