ABOUT US: The SPARK Grant project provided by The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and Florida Blue in 2016, the Jax Kid’s Mural Festival, was held four separate times last year in the Urban Core. Hosted by both the Jacksonville Landing and Hemming Park, the festival featured six freestanding walls with coloring-book-style murals painted on them designed by Jacksonville artist Nicole Holderbaum a.k.a. Nico and other artists from around the state that were then filled/painted-in by attending children. The festival was free to all and also included water activities, various crafts, and a skateboarding clinic provide by Instaramp. The project evolved last year in October when it became the Jax Kid’s Mural Project and received a grant from PNC Arts Alive Program. The Jax Kid’s Mural Project brings the mural festival into Title 1 schools to motivate and engage underprivileged children in creative and uplifting mural productions. “We believe that children have unlimited potential and are much more capable than they are given credit for. Unfortunately, our school system does not have the resources to provide every student with in-depth access to and instruction in the arts. This is unfortunate because there are many creative students who do not respond to other teaching methods but can thrive when the arts are integrated into the classroom. These students who struggle academically often suffer from low self confidence as a result of their grades and performance. Creativity can inspire confidence. It is our mission to provide students with a unique opportunity, in which they have control of the design and production of a beautiful and impactful mural. We also believe that students can benefit from interacting with creative professionals and artists. Such interactions and the resulting murals on their school campuses are uplifting for students and serve as a reminder of what they are capable of accomplishing.” Says founder Nicole Holderbaum. Visit our website here: www.jaxkidsmuralfest.com In essence, the World’s Largest Coloring Book Party is a fundraiser for the Jax Kid’s Mural Project so that the mural projects in schools can continue, and so the organization can branch out to create a free summer art camp for at-risk youth in underprivileged areas around the city. Tickets can be purchased at the event by a monetary donation, or you can bring 2 or more children’s books to donate as payment for entry into the event. All of the books will be given as gifts to the children that are a part of the Jax Kid’s Mural Project. “[In 2016] only 31 percent of Duval’s African-American students passed Florida’s annual reading assessments in grades 3 through 10, while Hispanics did slightly better, with 41 passing” (http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2016-08-07/story/literacy-gap-still-problem-duval-schools) By providing these children with free books we hope to provide them with more opportunity to develop their reading and comprehension skills. “We have never charged for our festival before, but the reason for the price this year is because we are going absolutely above and beyond to provide you with an incredibly engaging, uplifting, and truly creative experience. Our goal is to make this one of the most epic and creatively engaging art experiences this city has ever seen. We are teaming up with some incredible city entities like Kona Skate Park, students from Douglas Anderson and La Villa schools of the arts, Jacksonville Public Education Fund, Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Florida, multiple amazing street artists from all around Florida, and many other organizations. In fact, if you are interested in partnering with us to help produce the most creatively outrageous experience for Jacksonville children and families please feel free to email us at nicosuaveart@gmail.com” Holderbaum says. Thank you for your interest! We can't wait to see you there!

Free Adoption Weekend
The Jacksonville Humane Society – Join JHS and our friends from Animal Care and Protective Services for FREE pet adoptions at TWO locations this Saturday and Sunday! Petsmart Southside 8801 Southside Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32216 Jacksonville Humane Society 8464 Beach Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32216 The hours for this event are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at each location. This event is sponsored by PetSmart Charities. Additional fees may apply. Frequently Asked Questions: Do you have puppies, kittens, or small dogs? Both ACPS and JHS will bring all pets who are available for adoption. If there are puppies, kittens, or small dogs, they will be adopted quickly, so we advise you to come early. What does the "FREE" adoption price cover? The adoption fee covers the cost of spay/neuter, vaccinations, and care for the animal until time of adoption. The adoption fee has been waived to $0 or FREE for this weekend. Other fees may apply. Are the pets fixed? Vaccinated? Yes, every pet available for adoption will be fixed and given their vaccinations, including rabies. The only exception to the rabies vaccine is kittens and puppies under 4 months of age. What should I bring? Please bring your photo ID and cash. What does "additional fees may apply" mean? The city of Jacksonville requires all adopters under the age of 62 living within Duval County (excluding Jacksonville Beach) to pay the city licensing fee at the time of adoption for any pet that has received its rabies vaccination. The cost is $20. Also, we ask that cats go home in carrier and dogs with leashes and collars - you may bring your own or purchase from us. Can I bring my own pets to meet potential new ones? Well-behaved and healthy pets are welcomed in Petsmart stores. We do not allow them in the adoptions area, because it's very stressful for your own pet. Staff from both locations can help you find dogs who attend doggy playgroups and enjoy the company of other canines. Our staff can also send you home with instructions on introducing your new pet. Where can I see the pets who will be available? Shelters do not know in advance which pets they can bring because we will be doing adoptions at our facilities until Friday. You can always view adoptable animals at jaxhumane.org and coj.net/pets Will the shelters be open during this event? Yes, JHS will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during this event on both Saturday and Sunday. ACPS will be open on Saturday and closed on Sunday.

The Yoga Of Life, An Introduction to the Bhagavad Gita (NOV)
Soluna Yoga + Spa – GOOD NEWS! WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT Swamini Radhikananda will be back in the Fall, every 3rd Saturday! We have received a generous amount of interest in her continuing these classes! Thank you for your support and curiosity to dig deeper into the Bhagavad Gita! MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Offered every 3rd Saturday. Next class offerings: Nov 18 Dec 16 THE YOGA OF LIFE! An Introduction to the Bhagavad Gita (“The Song of God”) How can we take our yoga practice “off the mat” and into our life to help us meet the inner and outer challenges we face daily? Can I make life itself a yoga, a perfect union with the Divine and all beings and situations around me? We will explore these essential questions in light of the universal spiritual principles of the Bhagavad Gita, India’s most well-known scripture, with emphasis on its practical application and power to transform our experience, no matter what religious path we follow. (A handout of essential Gita verses to be discussed will be provided. (No prior attendance or experience is required to benefit from these classes). Now exploring important themes in Gita, Chapter 5: >How are Karma-Yoga and Sannyas (renunciation) essentially the same? >When it is said that the Knower of Truth thinks "I do nothing at all", what does this really mean? >What would the attitude or state of sama-darshinah (equal vision) look like in your own life? >How could the steps to reaching this equanimity be compared metaphorically to learning how to ride a bicycle, to drive a car, or to master a sport? What are the stages of that process? From previous classes: The Nature of Divine Action >What is the nature of divine action, and how can my "birth and action" also become divine? >How does one perform “true action” as opposed to merely re-action? >Why are the triplet emotions of "attachment, fear and anger" linked together, and how can Knowledge of the Self (Atman) remove this bondage? >Why is it said that the vision of Oneness is the supreme sacrifice (yagna)? >According to the Gita, what is the final mark of Realization? Discussion: The Secret of Dedicated Action (Karma-Yoga) Previously discussed: After declaring our true identity as the eternal, blissful Self (Consciousness) in Chapter 2, now Gita Chapter 3 unfolds for us the secret of happy, harmonious living: 1. What is the means to prepare my mind to abide in the Self while still actively engaged in the world around me? Recapping Gita Chp. 2: Solving our Identity Crisis: Who am I? 2. How can I free my mind from regrets of the past and worries for the future? 3. How can I transform my daily actions into the highest Yoga? The Secret of Dedicated Action (Karma-Yoga) 4. The supreme result of life lived in the Yagna-spirit (of selfless dedicated action): What happens when I let the Higher work through me? About the Teacher: SWAMINI RADHIKANANDA (Chinmaya Mission St. Augustine) has been teaching the Bhagavad Gita and other Indian scriptures since 1989. An urgent spiritual search in her early 20’s culminated in meeting her spiritual teacher, H. H. Swami Chinmayananda, in 1978, followed by years of intense study of Vedanta (Non-Dual Teachings of the Hindu scriptures) both in the U.S. and India. Swamini Radhikananda presently lives and teaches at the beautiful 18 acre Chinmaya Mission center just outside of St. Augustine (Elkton). She also enjoys devotional singing and chanting and has recorded several CD’s of spiritual music for children and adults. In February, 2015, she received the blessing of Sannyas initiation (the renounced order) and her new name from H. H. Swami Tejomayananda, Swami Chinmayananda’s successor. She considers it her greatest joy and privilege to share the inspiration and life-transforming teachings of the scriptures to other spiritual seekers and students of Yoga! Donation of $20 to attend. Please regisiter in advance.
