USDA Puppy Mill Inspection Listening Tour: Registration Required
Lawrence Humane Society – *** REGISTRATION REQUIRED! MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD! *** One of the duties of the USDA is to enforce the Animal Welfare Act by inspecting animal facilities -- including large-scale dog breeders. Now, the USDA is considering using third-party organizations instead of federal inspectors to perform these inspections. If the USDA abandons its responsibility for inspecting zoos, research facilities, and puppy mills, the fate of the animals in those facilities will be in the hands of private groups, which often have close ties to the industries being inspected. The role of inspection and oversight should not be relinquished to third parties. Imagine the types of private groups that would jump at the opportunity to take over inspections of puppy mills. With third party inspections, there is no doubt that animals will suffer more. Make your voice heard and help us and the pets in our state by participating in the upcoming USDA listening tour on Thursday, February 22 in Kansas City, MO. Register:

One School One Book
Thomas B. Chinn Elementary School PTA – Chinn is excited to be implementing One School One Book (Chinn style) in just a few short weeks!! ‘One School One Book’ is a program where each family of a school is gifted the same book. We are fortunate enough to have Title I funds we can use to purchase a book for each family at our school. So why do this? Reading together at home helps students be more effective readers. Research shows these students typically have bigger vocabularies, understand concepts better, and it helps foster a love for reading and learning. When an entire school reads the same book, it creates an even bigger excitement for reading and a sense of community among the staff, parents, and students! On Feb. 22nd, the book that has been selected will be revealed! Each family will receive their book at student-led conferences. Along with the book will be a list of questions that can be discussed at home after you have read the book together as a family. Families that are unable to attend conferences that evening will receive their book and questions the following day. There will be clues on the announcements and the Facebook event page about the book during the week leading up to the big reveal and giveaway. For more information about One School One Book, please check out the following link. We’re looking forward to sharing this experience with you and your child!

4 Hands Madagascar and Deschutes Abyss Flights
Flying Saucer Kansas City – This Thursday the 22nd, we will be doing something a little different. Instead of having just one rare beer, we will be offering FOUR rare beers set together in a flight. The flight will feature a 2-year vertical of Deschutes Abyss and 4 Hands Madagascar. This will allow you to enjoy this year's new product against last year's release. Abyss is a Russian Imperial Stout that is aged in bourbon, Oregon oak and Pinot Noir barrels and then blended with fresh product. The end result is a rich blend of molasses, licorice, vanilla bean and cherry bark. Madagascar is an Imperial Milk Stout aged in bourbon barrels with a generous amount of whole vanilla beans. This creates dark, smooth flavors of bourbon, chocolate and vanilla. Both beers are not only rare, but also decadent, complex and the perfect compliment to this chilly winter weather.
