Winter Haven Arbor Day Celebration
City of Winter Haven, FL (City Gov't.) – The City of Winter Haven, FL (City Gov't.) Natural Resources Division and Urban Forestry Advisory Board in conjunction with UF IFAS Extension Polk County are hosting an Arbor Day Celebration in honor of Florida Arbor Day. Displays and demonstrations concerning the importance of trees in urban areas, proper selection, as well as planting and care of trees will be set up to educate event participants. As part of this educational event, trees will be given away to the first 150 participating households. To “earn” a tree participants will be required to visit at least 3 displays to ensure they are learning about the tree they are being given, and how to care for it properly. UF/IFAS Extension agents and Polk County Master Gardeners will help with the education and demonstration components of the event as well as the County Forester available on site to answer participant questions. As a response to Hurricane Irma's damage to the urban forest, all three tree species chosen for the giveaway have "Highest" or "Medium-High" wind resistance on a 4-point scale, according to UF/IFAS research (https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/FR/FR17300.pdf). Other factors that went into our species selection include: - status as a native species - variety in mature sizes - wildlife benefit - desirability as an urban tree Funding was provided by Florida Forest Service? to support this event.

The Tale of the Allergist's Wife
Mad Cow Theatre – "The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife" By Charles Busch Jan 19-Feb 18, 2018 A Manhattan mid-life crisis comedy without apologies. An upper West Side comedy: fast bright and unapologetic. Contemporary and biting, the dreaded “mid-life crisis” is the pulse of this play’s heartbeat. Leading lady Marjory Taub lives an unsatisfying life of romantic opulence. She yearns to study the great philosophers but is stuck trying to pick out the right chandelier for her living room. Her luxurious and equally depressing life is suddenly knocked about after the arrival of an old friend. Marriages, sex, and ennui are all on hilarious trial in "The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife".
