Broncho Billy Anderson: Arkansas’s Own Oscar-Winning Movie Star
Historic Arkansas Museum – Broncho Billy Anderson: Arkansas’ Own Oscar-Winning Movie Star A Celebration of His Life and Work Reception, talk and screening of short films Special Guests: David and Rena Kiehn, world authorities on silent cinema Free; reservations required Join us for a celebration of Broncho Billy Anderson on his 138th birthday. We’ll have a reception featuring Jewish foods from his childhood (sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Arkansas) and a presentation by David and Rena Kiehn, founders of the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum in Fremont, CA. Some of Broncho Billy’s short films will be introduced and shown with live piano accompaniment by John Willis. Before his rise to fame, Broncho Billy Anderson was born Max Henry Aronson on March 21, 1880, to Jewish parents at a house on 713 Center Street in Little Rock, Arkansas (currently the location of First United Methodist Church). Later, Aronson moved to Pine Bluff. Aronson, known as Gilbert Anderson, played a huge role in defining not only silent films but the early cowboy-western genre. As Broncho Billy Anderson, he was the first cowboy-western movie star. Along with producing, directing and starring in 140 films as Broncho Billy Anderson, he is credited with being the first to sign Charlie Chaplin (with Anderson’s Essanay Film Company), producing the first film pairing of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and for directing the film (Mr. Flip, 1909) with the first-known instance of the pie-in-the-face gag. And in 1958, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Anderson an Honorary Oscar for his contributions to cinema. Prior to the reception at the museum, there will be a dedication of a marker honoring Anderson by Jerry Klinger, Founder of the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation, held at 6:30 pm in front of First United Methodist Church, 8th and Center Street, Little Rock. All are welcome. The celebration will continue on Thursday, March 22, in Pine Bluff at Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. For more information, visit their website. Yin Yoga with Rena Wren
Arkansas Yoga Collective – Yin yoga is a quiet practice suitable for students of all levels of experience. Through the practice of long held postures targeting mainly the connective tissue of the low back, hips and hamstrings, Yin yoga invites you to slow down and create space for stillness while nourishing your body. When we let the muscles relax, the work is done in the areas beyond the muscles and into the joints, ligaments, tendons and fascia. Many of the poses are seated, supine or prone, with special attention paid to areas that encompass a joint (hips, spine, sacrum). We hold poses with the muscles relaxed for several minutes. Also, by targeting the main meridians (energy channels) of the body, this type of deep tissue practice assists you in removing ama (toxins, blockages) and creating more mental and physical harmony. This is a more meditative practice with a focus on the breath, being present in the moment, relieving tension and letting go. The Yin practice includes powerful mental and emotional benefits as you become quiet, still and mindful of the present moment. Other benefits of Yin yoga include: reduces stress, creates calm in the mind and body, builds stamina, lubricates and protects the joints, increases flexibility in the deep tissue, and improves your meditation experience. Give yourself this opportunity to surrender, slow down and come back to balance. Yin yoga is a perfect complement for vinyasa flow and other physically challenging “yang” practices. Props are extremely useful for this type of practice so that you can access the deep tissue in the best way for your body. If you have props of your own, please feel free to bring them (blocks, blanket, bolster). Pop-Up Class Fee: $15

Smooth Hound Smith
Stickyz Rock N' Roll Chicken Shack – Smooth Hound Smith is a foot stompin' American roots duo comprised of "One-Man-Band" Zack Smith (guitars/vocals/foot drums/harmonicas) and Caitlin Doyle (vocals/percussion). Established in 2012, and currently based in East Nashville, TN, they record and perform a varied and unique style of folky, garage-infused rhythm & blues. Using primal foot percussion, complex, fuzzed-out, finger-picked guitar patterns, warbled harmonicas, tasty harmonies and A LOT of tambourine, they are able to create something rugged and visceral- a modern interpretation of early blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll music that harkens back to the traditions of hazy front porch folk songs as well as raucous back-alley juke joints. The duo has traveled over 100,000 road miles, playing over 500 shows in over 30 states in the last two-and-a-half years. Their eponymous debut album garnered attention from media outlets such as Nashville's independent radio, WRLT Lightning 100, as well as publications like American Songwriter and RELIX Magazine. They were also selected over thousands of other bands to perform at the 2015 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN, headlined by Billy Joel, Mumford & Sons, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, and more. In addition, the music of Smooth Hound Smith has been featured on ABC's Nashville, MTV's The Real World, and the Esquire Network.
