Day Time Book Club: The Ghost of Hannah Mendes
Congregation Or Hadash – July's book is The Ghost of Hannah Mendes, by Naomi Ragen; Discussion led by Anne Davis When Catherine da Costa, a wealthy Manhattan matron, learns she has only a short time to live, she realizes that her family tree will die unless she passes on its legacy and traditions to her granddaughters. But Suzanne and Francesca, beautiful young women caught up in trendy causes and ambitious careers, have no interest in the past. Catherine almost despairs until one night she is visited by the ghost of her family's ancestor, an indomitable Renaissance businesswoman named Hannah Mendes. The ghost of Hannah Mendes encourages Catherine to use every trick in the book to coerce the granddaughters to journey across Europe and acquaint themselves with their roots. While the sisters honor their grandmother's request out of loyalty, they believe their quest is futile--until it starts to uncover ancient pages from Hannah Mendes's fascinating memoir, and brings new loves into their lives. --A Goodreads Review

The Lemonade Project: July Session
Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) – What goes with a tall glass of Lemonade better than a little civil disobedience? Join your fellow “Lemonaders” at the flower stand at MODA on July 26 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. to make seed bombs. Seed bombs are used by farmers and protestors alike to sow seeds in hard to reach places. Seeds are packed into little balls and thrown wherever you want something new to grow. And don’t worry, eco-geeks, no invasive species here. After spending six months talking it out, let’s take all of our energy and transform it into action. Come join us, make some seed bombs, and discuss about different ways we can take action. Register now! Space is limited. The Lemonade Project is free to attend because designing for social justice, both personal and communal, is for everyone! Want to fuel this design movement to help inspire positive change in the world? Make a donation of $10 or more in support of museum and its efforts to mobilize change by design. Or become a MODA subscriber and made a monthly donation that helps to sustain programs like this one.

Whiskerman and Kyle Cox at Smith's Olde Bar
Smith's Olde Bar – Whiskerman and Kyle Cox live in the Atlanta Room at Smith's Olde Bar. WHISKERMAN Whether entranced in a ballad or clawing out some frenzied rock and roll, Whiskerman is seeking the heart of the matter. Lush instrumentation combined with front man Graham Patzner's profound lyricism and unflinching delivery culminate in a sound that is soulful, mythical, and raw. Patzner’s voice, both smokey and soaring, leads a passionate live show as the band’s classic rock sound seamlessly cascades through realms of bluesy devotion, psychedelic melancholy, and twangy celebration. Whiskerman's shows tend to set spells, either sweeping the audience up in revelation, or dropping them into knee-slapping frenzy. Joining Patzner (vocals, guitar, violin and piano), is Will Lawrence (bass and mandolin), and Charles Lloyd (guitar and sitar), Dan Schwartz (drums), and Trevor Bahnson (guitar). "When they're revved up, Whiskerman sounds like a gospel and soul band that can make you feel like raising your hands in the air in praise of its talent. In their quieter songs, there's a storytelling vibe with intricate melodies." (SF Chronicle) ?Their latest release is Champions, a sprawling double-album masterpiece that takes the listener on a hero’s journey through barroom rock n’ roll, blue eyed soul, pastoral folk, workingman’s blues, and rainy day ragas. ?“On Champions Whiskerman present ecstatic psychedelia, sturdily constructed pop-rock, pick-and-grin folk all together as a single picture.” (Flood Magazine) Small kyle cox KYLE COX Kyle Cox is a singer-songwriter originating from Orlando, FL (currently living in Nashville, TN) who emphasizes the importance of song with every melody and lyric. He takes pride in being a student of songwriting – drawing inspiration from peers and legends alike, while never letting his unique voice get lost. His latest record The Plan, The Mess, recorded with producer/drummer Mike Marsh (Avett Brothers, Dashboard Confessional), demonstrates his dedication to the art of songwriting perfectly. Whether full band or simply just his voice & an acoustic guitar, the song is always the focal point, never getting lost in production. Having toured extensively this past year, Kyle is very familiar with hard work. Possessing a “put your head down & pound the pavement” mentality, Kyle has done everything from opening up for more established acts in packed out venues to playing for smaller, more intimate living room crowds. But whatever the size of venue or crowd, one thing remains true – Kyle has an innate ability to connect with the listener through his songs in a deep and personal level.?

Race-Conscious Parenting Collective
Charis Books and More/Charis Circle – This group is designed to support the ongoing development of white parents of white and multiracial children who are seeking to unlearn and dismantle white supremacy within their families, schools, neighborhoods and faith communities. Parents of color are welcome to attend and participate if desired, however the aim of this group is for white parents who have an expressed desire to develop tools and skills to teach themselves and their children how to fight systematic racism. We have chosen to construct this group in this way as the direct result of multi-racial conversations about the need for a place for white parents to process their own racism and internalized racial superiority without burdening people of color with the processing of white folks' feelings. This group will stretch and grow to meet the needs of its attendees. It assumes best intent, an intersectional feminist approach (we all live at the intersection of multiple identities), and an understanding that white people must take the lead in dismantling white supremacy. This group is for parents (and prospective parents) of children and teens of all ages, though we may end up splitting into age affinity groups as the group grows. It is facilitated by Shannon Gaggero, author of the blog "A Striving Parent," and Elizabeth Anderson, Executive Director of Charis Circle, and Beth-Ann Buitekant, a local family and school therapist. Childcare will be provided and a donation will be collected to help pay for the childcare worker. If you have ideas, questions, concerns please email Elizabeth@chariscircle.org.This is a Charis Circle Strong Families, Whole Children Event. The suggested donation is $5.
