Central California Art Association & The Mistlin Gallery – Our featured story will be "Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos" by Monica Brown, followed by pet portrait drawing with oil pastel on velvet paper. Each Saturday will feature a different picture book and related art project. Participants will use a variety of mediums and techniques to explore an art concept, creating their own piece to take home. All ages welcome. Children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult. Modesto Junior College Arts – Labor leader Dolores Huerta will to speak at the free 24th Annual Martin Luther King, Commemoration on Saturday, January 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Modesto Junior College’s Performance and Media Center on East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto. At 5:30 p.m. Students will meet with Dolores in the MJC Little Theatre. All students are welcome! Dolores Huerta is president and Founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America (UFW) with César Chávez and Philip Vera Cruz. Dolores Huerta is a labor leader and community organizer. She has worked for civil rights and social justice for over 50 years. In addition to co-founding the UFW union, she served as its vice-president and has played a critical role in many of the union’s accomplishments for four decades. In 2002, she received the Puffin/Nation $100,000 prize for Creative Citizenship which she used to establish the Dolores Huerta Foundation (DHF). DHF is connecting groundbreaking community-based organizing to state and national movements to register and educate voters; advocate for education reform; bring about infrastructure improvements in low-income communities; advocate for greater equality for the LGBT community; and create strong leadership development. She has received numerous awards: among them The Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award from President Bill Clinton in l998. In 2012 President Barack Obama bestowed upon Dolores the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States.
