The use of Soils as “artifacts” in Archaeological Research
Winter Park Public Library – Archaeologists recognize landscapes across the globe as the products of active, cultural modifications. In other words, within academic literature landscapes have been idealized as “…theater[s] in which the drama of everyday life has been performed” (Patterson 2008:77). This lecture will discuss how soils and sediments, the building blocks of landscapes, are viewed as material “artifacts” by geoarchaeologists. Specifically, this talk highlights how this idea contributes to ongoing research in Antigua, West Indies examining the legacies of past intensive agricultural practices on contemporary landscape stability and soil quality. Antigua was colonized by the British in 1632. By the 18th century, Antigua and other sugar-producing islands such as St. Kitts and Barbados, became the “hub” of the British empire (Beckles 1998) and its expanding global, socioeconomic desires. Sugarcane monoculture was practiced on Antigua for close to 300 years (Dyde 2000). Environmental degradation resulting from such an intensive agricultural practice is imbued in the islands soils, sediments, and landforms. Behavioral geoarchaeologists employ a variety of interdisciplinary methods to analyze how human behavior is captured in soils, turning them into archaeological “artifacts” (Roos and Wells 2017). This lecture will analyze how soil analysis is key in examining the degree of landscape degradation across Antigua and its impact on the livelihoods of contemporary farmers. Anthony Tricarico is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida. His research focuses broadly on complex, dynamic coupled natural-human systems. For his dissertation, Anthony is researching how intensive agricultural practices from the pre-Columbian period through present day have increased landscape instability and soil quality loss in Antigua, West Indies. Specifically, his research looks at the commodification of sugar during the historic period and how socioeconomic and environmental legacies of the past help shape contemporary landscapes. Anthony applies various geoarchaeological, anthropological, and historic methods to analyze the challenges contemporary Antiguan farmers are facing today due to human-induced and natural environmental degradation.
