Opera Prelude: Norma
Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center – Join seasoned and new opera fans alike for a free lecture in MPAC’s “Opera Prelude” series! Guest speaker Dennis Ryan will discuss Bellini’s Norma. Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma is an extraordinary fusion of sublime melody, vocal challenge, and dramatic power. It examines an ageless and archetypal situation: a powerful woman compromises her ideals for love, only to find herself betrayed by her lover. But equally gripping is her relationship with the younger woman who is the new object of her former lover’s attention and in whom Norma sees both a rival and a second self. MPAC’s “Opera Prelude” program corresponds with the Met Opera Live in HD series that screens at Showplace 16 Theatre in Rockford. Join us for discussion on an upcoming performance led by a local opera expert. Even if you are unable to attend the live screening of the Metropolitan Opera performance, this is a great way to learn more about opera! **PLEASE NOTE: this lecture takes place offsite, at Wesley Willows in Rockford. Please check in at the front desk at 4141 N Rockton Ave 61103, and the Guest Services Associate will direct you to the room where the lecture will be held. http://mendelssohnpac.org/events/opera-prelude-norma/

Exquisite Corpse Mosaic
Womanspace of Rockford, Illinois – Inspired from a writing and drawing technique called “Exquisite Corpse.” The technique was invented by Surrealists in 1925 and is based on an old parlor game in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player for a further contribution. Later the game was adapted to drawing and collage, producing a result similar to children's books in which the pages were cut into thirds, the top third pages showing the head of a person or animal, the middle third the torso, and the bottom third the legs, with children having the ability to "mix and match" by turning pages. An exquisite corpse mosaic is produced in three sections. Each section is completed with mosaic, then covered and the next section is done by a different person not knowing what the other has done.
