Creating Stories & Sharing Lives: A Woman's Life Explored

During this special session of Creating Stories/Sharing Lives, our writing will focus on experiences that are most often unique to women. We will explore some areas of our lives through myth and Goddess archetypes while continuing to develop our storytelling skills. Our relationships with our mothers, body image, gender roles, the stages of a woman’s life, are some examples of the topics we will be delving into while staying connected to our mind, body, and soul. No experience with writing is necessary. Register by 1/15

Watercolor Variations Exhibit Opening Reception
Womanspace of Rockford, Illinois – Watercolor can be wild and free, precise and detailed or anything in between. Sue Gilbert Abare uses color and composition in an exuberant, expressive manner to share her experience with her surroundings. Jean Apgar focuses on the intimate details of nature, personal objects and animals to share her appreciation for the small beauties of the world. Their individual expressions mesh into a united vision in what is sure to be a beautiful exhibit.

Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center – Duo Sonidos brings together the talents of violinist William Knuth and classical guitarist Adam Levin in a surprising chamber combination that is simultaneously sophisticated and approachable. Backpacking the Appalachian Trail - Outdoor Adventure Series
Rocktown Adventures – Join Rocktown Adventures and Nature At The Confluence as we present the “Outdoor Adventure Education Series”. This 4 part series will have an interactive presentation on a different outdoor recreation topic each month from January thru April. ?January’s topic is Backpacking the Appalachian Trail.? Details: One hour presentation on what you need to know to start planning a hike on the Appalachian Trail. Learn about the gear you need, best practices for packing, physical conditioning required, and potential trail routes. We are heading to the AT in May for a 6 night/5 day backpacking adventure, so come out and learn what you need for a successful backpacking experience. Burpee Explorers: Explore Chordata part I: Fish
Burpee Museum of Natural History – Explore Chordata part I: Fish From this huge phylum of vertebrates you will study rays, a cartilaginous fish related to sharks from the class Chondricthyes and the order Myliobatiformes. To learn their special adaptations, you will see a variety of cartilaginous fish from Burpee’s permanent collection and examine your own specimen. This hands-on science workshop include time in the museum and items from the permanent collection and are designed to provide a meaningful intergenerational experience. Ages 6 and up. Students must be accompanied by an adult to assist with dissection. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required for the workshop. Snowshoe Hike & Instruction with Rocktown Adventures
Rocktown Adventures – Snowshoeing is a great low impact aerobic activity. However there is more to snowshoeing than simply taking a plunge in some untracked snow. Come have some fun in the snow, meet some new people, and learn the ins and outs of the fastest growing winter sport during our Nature at the Confluence Snowshoe Hike with Rocktown Adventures! Enjoy S’mores and Hot Cocoa around our big outdoor fire after your adventure! Part of Beloit Winterfest! Held Two Times This Season! January 20, 2018 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm February 4, 2018 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Details: This hour long hike starts with instruction where you will learn how to put on and take off your snowshoes, select the proper snowshoe, and dress for the outdoors in winter. After that we head out on the snow and learn how to get up from a fall, select a comfortable stride for walking and stomping, and turning around as we tour the loop around Nature at the Confluence. Snowshoe in Nature – Rockford
Rocktown Adventures – Snowshoeing is a great low impact aerobic activity. However, there is more to snowshoeing than simply taking a plunge in some untracked snow. This adventure will start with 30 minutes of instruction where we will cover how to put on and take off your snowshoes, select the proper snowshoe, and dress for the outdoors in winter. After that, we head out on the snow and learn how to get up from a fall, select a comfortable stride for walking and stomping, and turning around. The class will conclude with a naturalist theme guided tour. Location of the hike is TBD based on conditions. All participants will be contacted 48 hours in advance. The price for this Snowshoeing experience is $40 and includes snowshoes, poles, and a $5 gift Rocktown gift certificate. Class size is limited to 12 so don’t delay.
