Florida Conversations – Mary Jane Safford, M.D.: A Rediscovered
Tampa Bay History Center – Civil War nurse, physician, lecturer, author and suffragette. How has the remarkable life of Dr. Mary Jane Safford escaped remembrance for so long? This presentation reintroduces this dynamic woman to today’s audience. In the late 19th century, Dr. Mary Jane Safford (1831-1891) was nationally prominent in women’s circles but somehow her name is unfamiliar today. Following a short career as a Civil War nurse, she traveled extensively through Europe and western Asia before seeking further medical training. She wrote prolifically on medicine, travel, progressive reforms, race relations and temperance. For nearly the last 10 years of her life, Dr. Safford lived and practiced medicine in what was at that time western Hillsborough County. Join Doctor Elizabeth Coachman as she shares Safford’s story during this month’s Florida Conversations.

Creative Journaling for Deeper Awareness
Heartwood Retreat Center – This 3 hour workshop introduces the power of journaling for emotional balance and self growth, offering techniques and tools to expand our relationship with the written word as a path to healing and discovering who we are and what we believe. The class will cover a broad overview of key principals of journaling, including addressing issues such as privacy, how to write authentically, and how and why we should explore our honest feelings on the page without fear or feeling censored by others. Creativity, playful discovery, and how to mine nuggets of wisdom that are already within are primary themes, as well as how to keep up the discipline of writing daily and make it a joy to journal. Great for writers seeking more honesty in their work, or anyone who is interested in finding deeper truths in the story of their lives.
