Veterans Town Hall and VBA Claims Clinic
VA Portland Health Care System – Veterans, family members & media representatives are invited! Location: This event is in Salem & hosted in the auditorium (ground floor) of ODVA headquarters at 700 Summer Street NE, Salem, OR 97301 (3 blocks north of the Capitol). The VBA Claims Clinic starts at 5 pm & held in suite 100 and runs until about 7:30 pm, or when all Veterans/family members have been seen. Come meet with a VBA Claims Specialist regarding your claim or meet with a VAPORHCS Patient Advocate about any specific health care related issue or concern. The Directors of VAPORHCS and the VBA Portland Regional Office will start the Town Hall at 6 p.m. where they will share information and provide plenty of time for questions from attendees. Recycled Art Calendar Contest, $500 grand prize
Marion County Environmental Services – We invite K-12 students within Marion County to submit artwork that focus on waste prevention through repair and reuse. Each student will be allowed to submit up to three drawings and entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on October 6, 2017. Thirteen illustrations will be selected to produce the 2018 calendar and a $50 gift card will be awarded to twelve winners in the following grade group categories: K - 3rd grades, 4th – 6th grades, 7th - 9th grades and 10th -12th grades. A student from one of these four categories will have the opportunity to win the Grand Prize, which includes a $100 gift card plus their artwork will be featured on the cover of the calendar. Additionally, the teacher of the student whose artwork is selected for the grand prize will also receive a $500 gift card for classroom use. Selected winners will be honored at a televised Marion County Board of Commissioners meeting. Participants are asked to prepare a recipe from a place they have traveled to (or would like to travel to), and bring it in to discuss their adventures. It is encouraged that the recipe be from a cookbook but not mandatory, all we ask is that you bring in your recipe that you made to share with the group.

Marion Dems - Democratic Party of Marion County, Oregon – One of our most important functions is providing campaign support to local Progressive Candidates for Civic and Statewide offices through low-cost office space, campaign services, phone banking, yard sign pick up and drop off and much more. This will be the Second Annual Monroe Sweetland Dinner and we hope to have support from Democrats statewide as we celebrate Your Voice in Our Democracy. The evening will include Special Guest Speakers, live and silent auctions and lots of fun. Governor Kate Brown will return as the keynote speaker for the second year. With more than 25 years of service to the people of Oregon, Kate Brown serves as Oregon’s 38th Governor, making government more accountable and standing up for minorities and working families. Betty E. Komp, former Representative of District 22 from 2004 – 2017, will receive the Monroe Sweetland Award for 2017 in recognition of her elected service to all citizens of Oregon. Known as an education expert, a former teacher and principal, Komp served on both the policy and budget-writing education committees during her elected terms. Continuing a life of public service, Komp now serves as Chair, Mount Angel School Board. Also honored will be Meredith Wood Smith, who served as Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon from 2006-2012. In addition to her party service, Meredith has been a small business owner, president of a local business association, and sales representative for a mid-sized national corporation. Meredith Wood Smith will receive the Democratic Unity Award for her service to all 36 counties of Oregon. Jefferson Smith, best known as the founder of Oregon’s "Bus Project" and Xray FM, will serve as Guest Auctioneer. This year, we will be hosting a special VIP reception which will include many of our elected leaders. You must be a monthly donor to attend. CASA of Marion County Oregon – A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer is a trained citizen who is appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. Orientations are a great way to learn about the program, what it means to be a volunteer advocate, and ask any questions you may have. It is also the first step in becoming a Marion County CASA. There are many children in our community in need of an adult ally and an advocate. You can be a powerful voice in a child's life!
