We have drop-in beginner classes that cover a rotating series of topics, so stay in them until you’ve got your basics down. Illumination Foundation – Doors open: 6:30pm Screening: 7:00pm Discussion: 8:15pm TONY – THE MOVIE makes its OC premiere Orange Coast River Park and the Newport Beach City Arts Commission in partnership with Illumination Foundation and the Newport Beach Film Festival are presenting the OC premiere of TONY – THE MOVIE, a documentary about homelessness on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. The free screening takes place at Marina Park Community Center with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Directed by Dennis Stein, this 2017 film revolves around Tony, who ends up homeless after losing his job as a waiter in San Diego, and is faced with the daily struggles of life on the streets. His search for housing begins, but then turns into a quest for solutions to homelessness, not just for himself, but for thousands of people living on the streets across the country. The investigation takes him to the top levels of government locally, but also to regions across the country where progress is being made. What do communities do to significantly reduce homelessness? What is happening in San Diego? And does Tony find housing? The Wild Ride of Adolescence
Intellectual Virtues Academy of Long Beach A LBUSD charter middle school – Dr. Kimber Del Valle will lead us in a discussion about the adolescents' developing brain and what we can do to help them, and us, navigate it. Included in the discussion will be: neurobiology of conflict (what our brain does when we're angry), empathizing with chaotic and big feelings, and how to have a conversation when it feels like only one of us is reasonable. Kimber Del Valle has a doctorate in clinical psychology. She has a private practice in Signal Hill. She spent a decade working with adolescents in various Southern California college counseling centers and loves the adventure adolescents give us. At the moment, she's on her own wild ride with her daughter, Eden, who is a freshman at Millikan and former IVA student.
