Workshop with James Finley
Saint Barnabas – Becoming a Presence of Peace in the World. A One-Day Workshop with James Finely, PHD We may think of acceptance, listening, and compassion as little things, but they truly fill the whole world. Join us for this one-day retreat and learn how to cultivate these “little” arts, to become someone in whose presence others are better able to find peace amid difficulties. The day will begin with a contemplative exploration of a peace that passes all understanding. We will consider the attitude of acceptance as a path into the Divine Mystery that invincibly sustains us in life and death. And we will learn how to find our way to this Divine Ground and to rest in its ineffable peace. As the day moves forward, we will give this same prayerful attention to the arts of listening and compassion, learning methods of prayer and meditation to ground us in the transformational attitudes that underlie these arts. The day will include short periods of silent meditation, as well as dialogues on the themes presented. James Finley lived as a monk at the cloistered Trappist monastery of the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, where the world-renowned monk and author, Thomas Merton, was his spiritual director. He went on to become a clinical psychologist, Merton scholar, and sought-after retreat leader and teacher of contemplative living. His books include Merton’s Palace of Nowhere, Christian Meditation: Experiencing the Presence of God, and The Contemplative Heart. Currently, Dr. Finley serves as a core faculty member, with Fr. Richard Rohr and the Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault, of the Center for Action and Contemplation’s Living School, based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Finley, who lives with his wife in Santa Monica, California, is a gentle, reverent teacher with a love of humor and storytelling. His one-day retreat in 2015 was a highly praised Saint Barnabas event. We are so pleased to welcome him back in 2018! Tickets available:
