HCA 2017: A Native View of Illinois History
State Historic Sites at Springfield, IL – Interested in a unique perspective on our history? Join us for "A Native View of Illinois History," presented on Thursdays at the Old State Capitol during History Comes Alive (June 7 - August 13, 2017). The program is presented by experienced storyteller and author Brian Fox Ellis, and is based on Black Hawk's autobiography and the presenter's own Native ancestors. Lunch on the Lawn
State Historic Sites at Springfield, IL – Bring your lunch and enjoy some music on Thursday afternoons this summer! The Old State Capitol will welcome picnickers on Thursdays in June, July and August, days that coincide with “Artist on the Plaza” events. From 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., the site will provide free bottles of water for guests to enjoy with their lunches. There will also be a stack of blankets on the building’s south steps. Guests can borrow them to sit on the lawn during lunch or they can enjoy the new benches and tables that have been added as part of the Bicentennial Project to create a strolling garden and new seating options for the downtown square. Lincoln Troubadours at the Old State Capitol

HCA 2017: Civil War Camp Flag Raising Ceremony
State Historic Sites at Springfield, IL – The State Historic Sites @ Springfield are proud to be a partner in the Spirit of Lincoln Youth Leadership Academy. Join us as our next generation of leaders present the story of freedom at our historic sites this summer. Each Wednesday-Saturday, the group will begin by raising a flag at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site at 12:45 p.m. The public is invited to watch the flag-raising ceremony. Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, the Lincoln Troubadours will perform during the ceremony. The Spirit of Lincoln Youth Leadership Academy inspires area youth, junior high to high school age, with a message of empowerment and hope by presenting the stories of challenges that have been faced and overcome by those who have come before us. The Academy's goal is to reach students who could most use a positive message of courage and hope. The Academy organizers want the participants to understand that positive life lessons can be found in the past. Passion Got Me Here: Julius Mercer
Downtown Springfield, Inc. – This week is the last week of summer reading at Lincoln Library, and the theme is REPEAT, so we will have TWO passionate speakers today -- Julius Mercer at 1 p.m. and William Crook Jr. at 4 p.m. Julius Mercer is an author, activist, motivational speaker and former Olympic hopeful. He went from being a world-class hurdler to overcoming world-class hurdles, like drug addiction, homelessness, and suicidal thoughts. He has started what he calls his “Success Is in You” tour, where he shares with young people his true life experiences of how he went from fame to rock bottom, only to rise again, in an attempt to inspire them to make good decisions to ensure they succeed in life. ? Julius Mercer has written “A New Fire In You,” which details his life events. Julius also speaks at community gatherings and school assemblies and we are excited to host his talk and book-signing at Lincoln Library. His program has been featured in the Chicago Sun-Times, and he has received numerous endorsements from many of his former professional athlete friends. French Indochina Encampment
Illinois State Military Museum – The Illinois State Military Museum is hosting an outdoor living history event telling the story of the siege of Dien Bien Phu. This battle occurred in 1954 during the French Indochina War. Come tour the recreated trench and bunker displays full of historians portraying the siege. Event is open 2pm - 6pm Friday 28 July, and 9am-5pm Saturday. Museum is also open which tells the history of the Illinois National Guard.

Springfield Uketopians Concert
State Historic Sites at Springfield, IL – The Old State Capitol will be humming with activity this summer as it offers yoga classes, free concerts and “Lunch on the Lawn.” The fun begins Saturday, May 27, with the first concert by the Springfield Uketopians. These ukulele enthusiasts show off the versatility of the little Hawaiian instruments by performing everything from folk tunes to Beatles songs to modern pop hits The Uketopians don’t just perform. They teach, too. People of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate and see how easy it is to learn the uke. They’ll perform 10 a.m. to noon on May 27, June 17, June 24, July 15 and July 29.

Springfield Art Association – For our next tasting experience in Edwards Place, we're going to explore the history of rum in America, from the triangle of trade in the 18th century to tiki culture in the mid-20th century.
