Anti Offshore Oil Drilling Hearing and Happy Hour!
Sierra Club DC Chapter – The Trump Administration proposes to drill for oil and gas off the East Coast, and is hosting an open house about their plan in Washington, DC. We'll be there to submit our comment: NO to offshore drilling. Head to the Administration's (BOEM) offshore oil drilling open house anytime from 3-7PM at the Hilton Garden Inn (1225 First Street NE, Washington, DC 20002). After you have made your comment, join us for an ocean happy hour at Wonder Garten Bar just down the street--you'll need a drink after speaking with BOEM! We need volunteers to hand out information outside the hearing! If you'd like to get involved, email rachel.mandelbaum@sierraclub.org. For more background information: The Trump Administration’s Department of the Interior has proposed opening 90% of America's coasts to offshore drilling -- from Maine to the Gulf, and from Alaska down to Southern California. If Trump's plan becomes reality, spills will be inevitable -- and devastating. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill damaged 1,313 miles of coastline. That's more than the entire length of California, or half the Atlantic coast. Offshore oil spills happen frequently, devastating marine environments, commercial fishing industries, and tourism businesses. Even without spills, offshore oil causes pollution. We need to show this administration how deeply unpopular their drilling scheme is. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is holding hearings in coastal states throughout the winter: https://www.boem.gov/National-Program-Participate/#meeting
