Brothers Fun Camp 2017
Heritage Fellowship Church – Mon, Jul 24, 2017, 7:30 AM – Fri, Aug 4, 2017, 5:00 PM EDT The Brothers’ Fun Camp is an all-male two-week summer camp experience designed to enhance and support the growth and development of African American males who are rising 6th to 12th graders. Supporting our young men with activities that challenge them academically, spiritually, and emotionally, the camp selects academic instructors that are certified teachers. These teachers are willing and able to help our young men improve their potential for academic success by exposing them to material they may encounter. The Brothers’ Fun Camp also seeks and encourages support and involvement from many members of our community. The campers will have opportunities to hear the personal stories of successful and respected entrepreneurs, counselors, scientists, and other role models. Parental involvement is encouraged and is gratefully accepted because it is an essential component for the camp’s success. Most importantly, Heritage Fellowship Church believes and supports campers to freely explore and develop their faith and spiritual armor. Six years ago this camp was provided for six (6) young men in the homes of two involved parents. The parents found that providing a place for young men to freely express their thoughts and dreams, allowed them to bond and made a difference in the boys’ attitudes when they returned to school. Many teachers noticed a difference in them and the young men expressed a desire to come back the next year. The camp will include the following: Pre-algebra Algebra/Trig & Higher and other Math Tutoring Spanish, other language tbd Reading Comprehension Spirituality Algebra 1 !!!NEW THIS YEAR!!! Dag Detter for Public Wealth of Cities
Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café – PUBLIC WEALTH OF CITIES BY DAG DETTER IN CONVERSATION WITH BRUCE J. KATZ Crumbling streets and bridges. Poorly performing schools and inadequate social services. These are common complaints in cities, which too often struggle just to keep the lights on, much less make the long-term investments necessary for future generations. It doesn’t have to be this way. This book by two internationally recognized experts in public finance describes a new way of restoring economic vitality and financial stability to cities, using steps that already have been proven remarkably successful. The key is unlocking social, human, and economic wealth that cities already own but is out of sight—or “hidden.” A focus on existing public wealth helps to shift attention and resources from short-term spending to longer-term investments that can vastly raise the quality of life for many generations of urban residents. Bios Dag Detter specializes in public commercial assets and works as an adviser to investors, local and national governments, as well as international financial institutions to help unlock public wealth. As President of Stattum, the Swedish government holding company, and a Director at the Swedish Ministry of Industry, he led the comprehensive restructuring of the national government portfolio. Dag has worked extensively as an investment banker and an adviser in Asia and Europe and served as Non-Executive Director on a range of boards of private and public companies. Bruce J. Katz is the inaugural Centennial Scholar at the Brookings Institution, where he focuses on the challenges and opportunities of global urbanization. Katz assumed this cross-institution role in January 2016 after 20 years as the vice president and co-director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program, which he founded in 1996. He is also co-author of "The Metropolitan Revolution", which argues that cities have become the vanguard of policy innovation and problem-solving in the United States and the world.

Marjorie J. Spruill | Divided We Stand
Politics and Prose Bookstore – Following the United Nations declaration of 1975 as International Women’s Year, American feminists, including icons like Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem, gathered in Houston for the 1977 National Women’s Conference. There they established plans of action for abortion rights, gay rights, and the ERA. Meanwhile, a group of conservative women, led by Phyllis Schlafly and Lottie Beth Hobbs, rallied in favor of a pro-family agenda. In her dual narrative of these two opposing movements, Spruill, author of New Women of the New South and a member of the history faculty at the University of South Carolina, illuminates an overlooked chapter in the country’s deepening left-right divide. This event is free to attend with no reservation required. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis.

Zohar Connection Live with Ruth Rosenberg
Kabbalah Centre Washington DC – $20 The Zohar teaches that every week of the year has its own unique energy that – when channeled through spiritual work – can assist us in every aspect of our life. As we grow and apply the power of each week’s energy to our life, we begin to experience a change in our consciousness, which in turn allows us to see the world through a much larger lens and generate major shifts in our lives. Everyday life looks a lot different when you’re tuned into the big picture, as the change in perspective allows you to shed the trivial, overcome challenges and take control – week by week – of every facet of your life. This course offers you the opportunity to delve deeper into everything you’ve learned in The Power of Kabbalah courses and apply these dynamic concepts and tools to your life on an ongoing basis.
