Absolute Beginner Sewing Class - at Retro Den! Friday 1/19
Owl & Drum – Never sewn a stitch? And have no idea where to start? This class is where you learn how to sew, or get reintroduced if its been awhile. You do not have to know anything. Seriously, not a thing! No experience required. You will learn how to use a sewing machine, including threading the machine and bobbin, and what the heck all those little attachments are for. You will be introduced to basic sewing skills, tools and terminology, along with lots of tips and tricks. You will also learn to measure, cut and press fabric. Then, Mary will walk you through all the steps to complete a simple envelope pillow cover - a fun project that gets you using your newfound skills, and you go home with something made by your very own hands! *THIS CLASS IS AT OUR NEW LOCATION INSIDE RETRO DEN 1216 S. HARVARD* Price breakdown: $40 class + $15 for materials, which includes everything you need, most importantly - modern fabric from Owl & Drum! You will choose your fabric at the class. Please feel free to arrive 15-20 minutes early. A sewing machine is required for this class. If you do not have a sewing machine we have machines to rent for $5. Just send us an email when you sign up to let us know you'll need one, and we will reserve one for you. We have plenty of tools to share as you build your sewing kit, but please feel free to bring yours if you have one. Space is limited and reservations are necessary. Maximum 4 students per class. This is your opportunity to gain all the tools you need to make a difference in our community by assisting families with free preparation of their income tax returns. Finance Professionals, students studying accounting/tax law, people who have experience preparing their own taxes, individuals who have a desire to help others, people who want to learn a new skill, or people looking for community engagement. All volunteers will receive free training that will enable them to provide this assistance to the community. Training is offered both online and in the classroom. WHAT WILL THE VOLUNTEERS BE DOING? Intake Specialists: Welcome taxpayers and oversee sign in process, ensure that the taxpayer has the necessary information and documentation required, and explain the process. Tax Preparers: Participate in the IRS tax training and complete certification, prepare tax returns, and discuss the tax return with the tax payer. Site Coordinators: Participate in the IRS tax training and complete certification, provide support to other tax preparers, check completed returns for errors, and file completed returns.
