Arm Balance: Flow and Conditioning with Juan Carreno
Be Love Yoga Studio Tulsa – - Arm Balance: Flow and Conditioning // Sun, Nov 19 - This workshop is designed to give the tools to develop a more creative and powerful yoga practice by incorporating arm balances into flows found in any yoga class, and improve the overall conditioning needed to sustain an arm balancing practice. The class will start off with drills to help improve your body’s ability to enter arm balances more readily and with confidence. From utilizing the core muscles to understanding the foundation needed to ensure a safe arm balance practice. Then the class will go over simple Vinyasa and Hatha based flows and where arm balances can be incorporated. This is also a chance for students to develop their own creative thought process in where in a practice can they find these arm balances. We will go over the following arm balances: - Crow: shoot backs and hop in - Firefly and Tri-pod Headstand: movement into either position - Flying splits 2: Lizard pose flow (splits experience is not needed it’s just the name :P) - Eight angle: Side plank transition - Scale and Extended Scale’s Pose: Shoot backs into plank/downward dog The workshop will also go over restorative care for the wrists and arms to ensure a more integrated and sustained practice for any additional future arm balancing. By adding in arm balances into your yoga practice, you build more creativity into your flow and improve the body’s overall strength physically and mentally. Some yoga experience would benefit you, but all levels are welcome. OSU Jazz Orchestra with Tommy Poole & Seamus Blake
Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame – The Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame welcomes Dr. Tommy Poole back to the Jazz Depot stage alongside the OSU Jazz Orchestra and special guest Seamus Blake. Dr. Tommy Poole is Director of Jazz Studies and an assistant professor of music at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He is an active saxophonist and woodwind doubler in a variety of genres. He has recorded as a saxophonist on numerous commercially available CDs ranging in style from classical, to jazz, to pop. He has performed professionally with Ramsey Lewis, The Woody Herman Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, Andy Montanez, Glenn Monroig, Diane Schuur, Joe Williams, Mercer Ellington, and Dianne Reeves among many others. Poole has composed and arranged works for a variety of settings from commercial showbands, to jazz big bands, to full-sized studio orchestras. His orchestrations have been featured on at least seven commercially available CDs. His first two CDs as producer, On Cue-the Music of Seamus Blake (2012) and Out Front (2015) featured arrangements, compositions, and performances by Poole and received critical acclaim from AllAboutJazz.com, JazzEd Magazine, Currentland, and Oklahoma Magazine. Poole has presented workshops, or served as guest artist/performer, guest conductor, clinician, and/or adjudicator at California State University Long Beach, California State University Los Angeles, Eastfield College, Northeastern State University, Los Angeles Community College, Pittsburg State University, Slippery Rock University, Tulsa Community College, and The University of Arkansas (Fayetteville). He has served in similar fashion for countless regional high school conferences, honor bands, and jazz festivals. His research on metric modulations in jazz has been published in Jazz Inside Magazine. He serves as President of Oklahoma Jazz Educators (OKJE) and is a member of the Jazz Education Network, College Music Society, and the National Association for Music Education. Winner of the 2002 Thelonious Monk Jazz Award, saxophonist, composer, and arranger Seamus Blake is a forward-thinking musician focused on modern creative jazz and swinging post-bop. Born in England in 1970, Blake grew up in Canada and eventually studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. After graduating, he relocated to New York City and quickly established himself as a regular performer and in-demand sideman. During this time, he recorded with several name artists including drummers Victor Lewis and Billy Drummond, pianist Darrell Grant, and others. He has also toured with John Scofield, and is a regular member of the Mingus Big Band. As a solo performer, Blake has recorded a steady stream of albums including his 1993 solo debut, The Call, on Criss Cross; 1997's Four Track Mind; 1999's Stranger Things Have Happened; 2000's Sunsol; 2001's Echonomics; 2007's Way Out Willy, and 2009's Bellwether. He is also a co-leader of the collective jazz, rock, and funk ensemble Bloomdaddieswith whom he has recorded several albums including the band's 1996 self-titled debut, 1998's Racer X, and 2001's Mosh for Lovers. A consummate live performer, Blake has also released a handful of well-received concert albums including 2001's Live au Cabaret, which featured him performing in Montreal in 1999, and 2008's double-disc Live in Italy, which showcased him over several nights in Palermo, Senigallia, and Cesenatico. In 2010, Blake released the concert album Live at Smalls, featuring such longtime bandmates as drummer Bill Stewart, guitarist Lage Lund, bassist Matt Clohesy, and pianist Dave Kikoski. A member of drummer Adam Nussbaum's BANN ensemble, Blake appeared on the group's 2011 debut album, As You Like. The OSU Jazz Orchestra is the premier performing group of the OSU Jazz Studies program. Highly qualified students are selected by audition for placement in the group at the start of each academic year. Instrumentation consists of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, bass, piano, drums, and guitar. All university students are invited to audition. Averaging 7-8 concert per year, the OSU Jazz Orchestra regularly premiers arrangements and compositions specifically written for the group for its on and off campus concerts and/or CD recordings. Averaging 2-3 guest artists annually, recent guest artists have included Christian McBride, Geoffrey Keezer, Gillian Margot, Wycliffe Gordon, Conrad Herwig, Bobby Shew, and Randy Brecker. The Leftover Last Waltz '17
Cain's Ballroom – In the same spirit as the original Last Waltz, The Leftover Last Waltz is a celebration of music and art, as well as the initiatives and contributions of the Woody Guthrie Center to Tulsa, Oklahoma. The event is aimed at promoting the ideas of Woody Guthrie, whose music spoke of reality and gave a voice to an important time in American history. 100% the money raised and the donations accepted through The Leftover Last Waltz will go directly to support and fund the education initiatives of The Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Proceeds from the event will be used to provide the youth of Tulsa with an opportunity to explore their creativity and empower them to find their own voice. Additionally, after school programs and summer music camps will be directly impacted by the proceeds generated from The Leftover Last Waltz.

Easy Sew - Cloth Napkins
Owl & Drum – A fun and easy sewing project! Learn to make cloth napkins to decorate your family's table! Instructor Mary Perisho will walk you through all the steps to sew basic cloth napkins, including cutting, pinning, sewing on the machine, following a seam allowance, pressing, and top stitching. This class is excellent for skill building, and is beginner friendly! This simple project is ideal to learn in class, then go home and replicate. You can expect to complete two to four items during class. Ages 11 and up. $45, plus materials. Students will choose and purchase fabric at the time of the class. All materials purchased for the class receive a 10% discount! Bring your sewing machine and tools if you have them. If not, you can rent a machine for $5, and borrow our tools. We're happy to share!
