CCED July Outreach Day
Chinatown Community for Equitable Development (CCED) – Join CCED for our next Outreach Day: Sunday, July 23 @ 1-4 pm Meet at: Kleverdog Coworking, 418 Bamboo Lane, Los Angeles, California 90012 ~~ Learn about issues facing low-income and immigrant Chinatown residents! Learn about and get involved in community organizing! Improve your language skills! We will provide an orientation, snacks, and practice session. ~~ New developments all over LA and in Chinatown are causing rents to jump up by hundreds of dollars for low-income families all over LA, just this year. In Chinatown, low-income seniors are being forced to move out of buildings in the shopping area while young, affluent folks move in. Many of these seniors who are being displaced have lived in Chinatown for over 20 years and have helped to build Chinatown into what it is today. They are being unfairly forced out of their homes because young, affluent folks are willing to pay more. Immigrant families have been illegally pressured to accept cash for keys, meaning they are pressured to accept money to leave their homes, often with no other housing options. We need your help! Join us for outreach day to support our community and learn about the issues. Meet our long-term volunteers and local housing rights organizers. Together, we will table at Alpine Park and door-knock buildings under threat, to build with residents. JOIN US FOR OUTREACH DAY ~~ We need your help in fighting gentrification and resisting displacement and evictions in Chinatown! Help us mobilize low-income immigrant residents to fight for their right to stay and continue living and working in a Chinatown! Calling multilingual volunteers for onsite translation! Many Chinatown residents speak Cantonese, Khmer, Mandarin, Toisanese, Teochew, Vietnamese, or Spanish. If your language skills could use improvement, we'd love to have your help! We can practice and learn new vocab together. And, if you only speak English but would like to volunteer, join us for outreach day too! Many residents speak English! You can still be a part of a movement that is multilingual and multigenerational. ~~ Please RSVP here on the Facebook event. Questions? Please email Frances (tokyoshuynh@yahoo.com) or Kenny (kchankx@gmail.com). ~~ ACCESS INFO At Outreach Day, volunteers have the option of staying inside and making phone calls or walking around Chinatown with varying levels of physical intensity and distance. Depending on the location of the training space (upstairs and downstairs conference room), the training may be wheelchair accessible; we will do our best to use the downstairs conference area. If the training takes place in the upstairs conference room, there will be one flight of stairs. All bathrooms are gender neutral and single use; two bathrooms on the ground floor are wheelchair accessible. The training space is not fragrance free, and we encourage attendees to refrain from wearing or using scented fragrances, perfumes, lotions, hair gel, deodorant, etc, and if washing clothes to wear beforehand, not using fabric softener or fragranced dryer sheets. The best is to wash clothes with baking soda and scent free laundry detergent. Please feel free to contact Frances (tokyoshuynh@yahoo.com) or Kenny (kchankx@gmail.com) with any additional access info and needs. Furniture inside is moveable, and the space is air conditioned. There is ample street parking (free on Sunday) and paid parking lots nearby. Walking distance from Union Station. ~~ Please bring refillable water bottles! We will have some snacks. And dress comfortably. Bring hats. & friends!

Gallery Tour: On the Catwalk
Fowler Museum at UCLA – The exquisite work of African fashion designers on the international level is the focus of a walkthrough of AFRICAN-PRINT FASHION NOW! with co-curator Betsy Quick. Free and open to all. Parking available in UCLA Lot 4 221 Westwood Plaza off Sunset Blvd $3/hr or max $12/day -- A new generation of designers in Africa and its diasporas presents its works on the global runway. Trained and living in Africa, as well as the United States and Europe, these talented men and women speak an African fashion aesthetic in their own voices, impressing audiences with their formal and informal attire, architectural cuts, and sinuous silhouettes. Designing with African print, they make use of its striking graphics and explosive color in bold statements and daring styles, as they push traditional sartorial boundaries. Citizens of the world, yet rooted in their heritages, this new generation of designers mixes local fashion conventions with global trends. They also combine African prints with other fabrics. Building upon long-established trans-border connections within Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, they make these historic connections known to a worldwide public. These designers play a major role in giving African prints international prominence in the twenty-first century. Their work highlights the continued importance of the cloth in endowing the wearer with a sense of belonging and shared history. Embodying beauty, modernity, and heritage, these styles create transcultural communities across Africa and across the world.

Nunday Funday: Sister Act 2 - Back In The Habit (in 35mm!)
The Cinefamily – Most sequels go the way of Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo or Speed 2: Cruise Control. Some, when you get that delicious alignment of talent, inspiration, and a dose of gonzo, take the Gremlins 2: The New Batch path. Sister Act 2 – a strange, beautiful, hilarious movie – belongs in the latter category. It was a different world when the Sister Act franchise arrived in cinemas in the early 90's. We had no idea that Whoopi Goldberg would one day helm The View, while Harry Potter‘s Minerva McGonagal was just a twinkle in Maggie Smith’s eye. Deloris (Whoopi)’s singing career is soaring in Vegas, is recruited by Smith for a classic “one last ride” rejoin the nuns in rescuing a declining San Francisco public school from closure. Fish-out-of-water hijinks ensue, while a lurid batch of musical numbers – including arrangements of Marvin Gaye and Supremes tunes – are exemplary of the ambitious, entrepreneurial cinema of the era. Oh, and it also launched the careers of Lauryn Hill and Jennifer Love Hewitt! Director Bill Duke (who’d helmed episodes of Miami Vice and a number of hard-boiled crime flicks, in between acting turns in Car Wash and Predator) notched a historical touchstone by being the first African American to helm a blockbuster sequel – and doing so with bravura style. Dir. Bill Duke, 1993, 35mm, 107 min.
